The 1950's Cold war had many impacts on Southern California.

Join me for a day excursion back in time when the steep walls of Shoemaker Canyon echoed with the sounds of a difficult and fruitless construction effort to create an escape route out of Los Angeles.

Whether on foot or on mountain bike it is an easy path to take

Be sure to watch for the evidence of the prison labor gangs who toiled for 15 years to build two tunnels and 4.5 miles of road.

The tunnels are the best part of the journey back in time. Although blighted by graffiti from the lowland lowlifes, they are in wonderful shape and well worth the day to see them.

Can you drive all the way through or is it blocked off somewhere along the trail? I'm interested for a day trip

You can only hike, bike or even jog the route. No water is available but otherwise it is an easy day hike. I posted a map at my blog report. Elevation varies between two to three thousand feet.

Thanks, I had read it earlier when you posted, I'm always looking for interesting new places to go. Seems like a quick ride to take...

Using a mountain bike is nice because it is easy to stop and investigate things yet keep an good overall pace, especially heading back down hill!

Great write up and pics, thanks for taking the time to add the history to your blog, that cold war stuff is pretty interesting to read about.

Thanks! I have been to some sites long ago but did not take good pictures. Unfortunately many of those places have been bulldozed into housing blights and others have been destroyed by government types that only view them as a nuisance.
