Lowrance 540C

I was out this last weekend with a friend that has a Garmin Etrax little hand held jobber and I think I got a raw deal. His would show the forest circus road we were driving on and mine didn't but then the newly purchased forest circus paper map I have didn't show it either. I have heard that the Lowrance software upgrade lacks detail in some areas like New Mexico and is better in more popular areas like Colorado, has anyone been able to verify this?

So far i haven't been on one trail it hasn't showed. Worked 100% flawless for us for 3 consecutive trips. I'll also add that we just got back from Death Valley and it listed EVERYTHING we ran. Showing us mines, historical sites etc.. AND furthermore.. another person was out with the exact same unit (just purchased) and had the same comments with his - loved it.

Maybe its just the area you were in not being popular like you said. We haven't traveled outside of CA with ours yet.. so i wouldn't know.

Lowrance's TOPO software (540C) doesn't show all the trails in NM?

Weel my 480c is an awesome machine. Being the predecossor of the 540 it lacks a few feature but is almost the same. Down here if FL it shows everything and even the trails that show no name on the maps are named correctly on the gps.

Thanks for posting those pics! It looks like a good setup and that screen is massive. Nice to be able to mount your antenna inside the vehicle. I affixed the magnetic-mount antenna for my Sirius radio on the rear sports bar, beneath the padding, and it works great. One of the few benefits of a fiberglass hardtop.

I was thinking of buying that unit for my TJ, but the size is just too much of a cop- and thief-magnet around these parts. People get ticketed for impaired vision when they have their tree air fresheners hanging from the mirror, so it's just an invitation to get pulled over with something that big sitting on your dash...

If you have a sport cage you can easily mount the Lowrance in such a way that it's easily removed and it's not blocking your view to the front.

I am the other person, it is a great unit. I did hownever note that some of the out of the way places we went, it marked it as a trail, not a road. Well I guess it was kinda a trail. LOL

Thanks for that, I just updated mine as well. I was at 1.5, and it would take awhile to get sat signal, now it is immediate.

Thanks for posting this. I checked for updates last weekend and found I was a version higher than they were posting (1.5). I wish they would give more details about the changes they made. Their explaination did not mean much to me.

Modified memory card reading functionality
Enhanced Navionics support
Includes all features from previous updates, including:
Enhanced NauticPath electronic chart support

I have a couple of questions on this GPS....I am looking to mount it up high on my sportcage crossbar using this mount.....

First...is it possible to reverse how the GPS sits in its cradle, ie so it will not hang upside down when used with the rollbar clamp and secondly, how long are the antenna and power leads? If I decide on that location, it will be located up high and I'll need a fair amount of length to run it across the top bar, along the downbar and then under the dash. Thanx.

You should be fine. Mine is located up high on my windshield channel and I still have plenty of length left on the antenna and power leads. I ran the wire exactly where you plan to as well.

As soon as I get a cage I am going to have a piece of aluminum welded between the front spreader bars so that I can mount my CB and GPS up there and angle them so that they face me.
