Lowrance HDS-5 Available?

I got to play with this unit yesterday and wow it's nice. Much nicer than our Baja540C. The background map almost looks like google earth. It's crazy. The screen is bright and very crisp. I like the new unit.

But from what I understand it still uses the crappy Mapsource 7 for Topo imagery.

I also wonder if they made it less cumbersome/bulky to move tracks/routes/waypoints/etc. between PC and the unit and visa versa?

A Mac interface would be even nicer...and a black background for night mode...

On the Lowrance site only the 5 inch is listed for automotive use. All the larger screens are marine use.

The 5 inch listed in the automotive section uses the same old Mapcreate software. It does not have the new fancy Insight software.

I think currently there is nothing to get excited about for us automotive types.

Can we use the old Baja 540c antenna? Should still be the same right?

Your 540c antenna will work fine with the HDS but the 540c used an 8 channel antenna. The new $250 antenna for the HDS (as well as the built in antenna) is a 12 channel design and also updates faster (5x per sec vs 1x per sec?).

What this means is that your HDS with the 540c antenna will have the same accuracy and update speed as the 540c rather than the faster more accurate performance the HDS advertises.

Does anyone know the max memory card size for a HDS-5? Can anyone give me a metric for how much mapping data I can get on a specific size card?

Anyone with an HDS-5 or a 540C mounted in a first gen Tacoma? I am looking for ideas. Thanks.

Regards,

Loren
