LR3 Cold/Wet Weather Prep

Last week I moved from San Diego to Wisconsin. My LR3 has been a SOCAL car its entire life, so foul weather has never really been much of a concern. I was reading another thread and someone mentioned that they had to modify some lines that would get gunked up with salt from the roads. This got me thinking, and I wanted input from everyone on the things I can do to best minimize the effects of the snow, rain, cold, etc. on my gracefully aging LR3.

You need true coat.

In all seriousness. I believe it is the electrical connector behind the LR tire. Clean it out and put in dialectic grease to keep the connections from corroding. Or are you referring to air lines?

Keep an eye on the Canbus wires that run through at the rear of the drivers side rear wheel wheel. If yours is mint, mine is not, fixed four times now due to salt corrosion, do above but also purchase the extra sleeve and install it. And, try and keep the area clean.

Be prepared to hose down the underbody parts in freezing temps. I tried to use a carwash with an underbody wash as often as possible during the salt months. The sills have the AC and heater lines, hose those down when you can. Keeping the frame free of salt and or mud is probably the most important.

Check the wiring in that area.

Funnily enough, it's not an issue here in Scotland..

I would say, check the battery and alternator, a strong electrical supply keeps the LR3 a happy car. The battery age can be checked on the negative terminal.
Anything over 5 years and i personally would change it for a new one.

Otherwise, the usual checks of proper winter screen wash in the bottle, new wipers as every car i've bought ALWAYS has crap wipers on them, and make sure the tyres have good tread on them.

Whenever the temp goes above zero Celsius, I get in the car wash and spend more time on the underneath than the body. The joys of salt roads. It does make for great moose viewing come the spring.

Thanks for all the feedback should get the first snow of the season tomorrow. I will have to get the grease on tomorrow.

Colin: Is that extra sleeve something that is additional, or is it replacing an older one?

AJM: I've been watching my alternator closely lately. I installed a second battery about six months ago, and feel that the alternator's days are numbered.
