LR3 key issue

So I just purchased an 06 LR3 and I am trying to get it back up to 100%. Which at this point is new control arms, inner tie rod, some interior cleaning (actually a lot of cleaning), and the second key. The previous owner said the second key had a dead battery and having replaced batteries in key fobs before I didn't think much of it. I should have thought "this is a Land Rover". After doing some research over the weekend, the one thing I cannot figure out is if the key actually is dead. I have my doubts. So I insert key and turn ignition and the stereo comes on, but the dash will not light up and the car will not start. I took the key to a part store and they have this thing that tests the signal strength. It claims the key is in fact putting out a signal, though not a strong one. So it seems to me that if that tester is correct, I am guessing this key might have lost it's programming/pairing or whatever you call that. Does this sound like a dead battery or is it something else? I haven't found a consensus in my research on if a key with a dead battery will start the engine? Some people say yes, some say no. Anyone have experience with this?

My experience is not what you want to hear: head to the dealership and prepare to drop $$$. The key does multiple functions, it might start but at the end of the day getting it re-programmed or a new key may be in order.

I just replaced the batteries in both of my LR3 fobs. Unfortunately for you I did not test the key while the battery was removed from the circuit board and I did not wait until they were completely toast before replacing the battery.

To replace the batteries you need 3 things:
- A replacement fob shell ($10)
- A VL2330 Panasonic Rechargeable Battery ($10)
- A basic soldering Iron and a little skill to use it.

There are a bunch of guides and youtube videos that show the process. I would risk the $20 and try that first. A new key is gonna be like $350.

Is it possible to do the reprogramming outside of the dealer? Does the IID tool have that functionality?

I don't think so. Also, you need to reprogram BOTH keys at the same time. I brought my dealers mechanics a flat of Vente Starbucks coffees into the shop prior to the service writers getting there (early am), and they reprogrammed them for me.

That is interesting that the IID can do it, I went through all this before getting mine-lesson learned there.

The key will work if it is dead to start the vehicle, but not to unlock the doors electronically. I have a dead one. A word of warning I also tried Remote's Inc. 1564 Fitzgerald Drive - Unit #118 Pinole, CA 94564. DO NOT DO THIS !

Two of us ordered keys, the "other" guy had his key cut and attempted to get it programmed. It wouldn't work. So we both requested to return them, and were approved. Unfortunately, I never got a refund. First they claimed they never got it. After I provided proof of delivery, they claimed I had tried to program it, which I didn't, doesn't much matter as it would not have worked. Finally, they simply ignored me..

Still no Refund!! It's been 3 years July.

If you can't fix your remote, order a key from a dealer, it has to come from the factory with the VIN, then paired to the vehicle.

Thanks for all the replies. The IID Gap Tool was on my list of things to get, so I will start there and if it doesn't solve the key problem, I haven't spent any money I wasn't planning on spending. Really don't want a new key. Seriously, when did it become normal for keys to be so expensive?

Just to make sure the IIDTool's capability to program a fob for the LR3 is understood... It can successfully reprogram an original fob for that vehicle if its immobilizer chip has somehow been disabled (which may be the case here), or a new, never before programmed fob. It cannot reprogram a used key from another LR3. Once it is mated to a specific VIN, that fob is useless on any other car, with or without IIDTool.

Did you have to reprogam its after?

No. The key works perfectly after replacing the battery WITHOUT any extra steps to pair or re-program. Now both the 10+ year old keys for my LR3 work perfectly, have great range, and look like this:

Just as an update to my issue, battery was fine but the key had lost it's programming. So that's why it would not start the engine. Key works great now.
