LR3 or LR4 with HD package (locker)

There seem to be a lot out there right now. autotempest.com and autotrader.com are your ticket. Seems like prices have gone down a lot in the past month.



I originally thought 2013, but ended up breaking the budget for features on the 2016.

Also, just in case you do not know. 2010-2013, you can run through vindecoderz.com and then search for "diff" and it will say if the diff is locking or open. When you run a 2014-2016 vin, you don't get that detail and I revert to the pictures of the vehicles traction controls to see the far right controls for shifting the transfer case.

In the attachment there are the controls on the right to take the tcase into high(highway) or low(mountain). These are blank in the none HD 14-16. Can't tell on the 10-13 models with pictures, must use VIN.

From what I know, if you have dual range transfer case on14-16 models you always have the locking rear diff. I really like my 2016 and found one with under 50k miles. I looked for a few months and grabbed a clean one quickly.

I run all of them through vindecoderz. Many 2014-2016 will be advertized as base models, but most are not.

FWIW, it’s unlikely you’ll need the rear locking diff. Land Rover traction control is black magic.

My wife drives a RRSC, locking rear diff. Most extreme “off roading” it’s done was a soaked clay road at the gun range.

My dad had an LR4, locking rear diff, don’t know it ever went down a dirt road.

I have an LR3, no locking diff, and beat the piss out of it regularly in a 500k acre national forest. It has been sunk in mud over the tops of the tires, crawled up 2’ almost vertical ledges, many creek crossings, etc. I have not gotten it stuck yet. Been through places where a buddy got his Land Cruiser stuck. Closest I’ve been was high centered in ruts, likely made by 37’s, I’m on 32’s. Air suspension went into extended mode, I hit the switch to raise it higher, and was able to back out.

People seek out these rear lockers to drive down fire roads and it’s just not necessary.

The guy obviously wants a locker, and silly not to.

So you think it's important to this buyer what your wife and dad drive? I drive P38, D1, LR4. Locked and loaded D1 wins every time offroad.

If I came across 3' of mud, it would have to be a life threatening situation for me to attempt. I would try to fly across it. But my first choice would be turn around.

Over your tires in mud is beyond the fording depth of LR3 which is at most 28 inches. Clearance with oversized tires is at most 12".

Unless you have winch... sunk to above tires is stuck on almost any vehicle.

Pics of sunk in mud over tires or it never happened. ;-)

I have a 2006 LR3 with 302K miles, with no rear locker and it’s been fine for pretty much everything I’ve thrown at it.

I also have a 2013 and 2016 LR4 with the rear locking diffs and I’m absolutely glad I have them, even if don’t think I’ll really ever need it. But both the ‘06 and ‘16 have a winch on the front, so I doubt I’ll get stuck in either case.

And for the 2010-2013’s, you can see if the spare underneath is a full size spare, and if so, 99% of the time it’ll have HD. Otherwise, either crawl under to visually see the motor on top of the diff or use a VIN decoder like already mentioned.

And like mentioned above, anything from 2014-2023 with the two-speed transfer case WILL have a rear locker.

I didn’t say a locker wasn’t superior, I just said it’s unnecessary for 99% of LR3/4 users, and if experience is with other vehicles without lockers is VERY different due to LR’s modern traction control.

I didn’t get out and take a photo of the vehicle sitting in the mud hole, as I was focused on driving out rather than being stuck in BFE with my 3 year old. Here is a photo of the water line on the fender flare after we backed out of the hole. Notice the air suspension is in “extended mode” which is the only reason we were able to reverse out of the situation.

Last time I drove through it (1-2 weeks before) it was about a foot deep with sand bottom, it had been trenched out which wasn’t visible with the water over top.
