Ok well now I'm moving interest to the LR4. I've had some luck with finding examples with the HD package and they check all the boxes except for no nav (obviously) and the prices are only 8-12k more than an LR3 with similar (higher) mileage.

I understand the LR3 is more utilitarian and the LR4 is more "cushy" ... Any reliability problems coming from the LR4 camp? I've heard 2005 is a not so good year for LR3s, is it the same case with 2010 LR4s?

I've not completely jumped ship as I actually prefer the LR3. Just thinking about options

They're both equally "utilitarian" but the lr4 does have nicer finishing in the same usable space. Actually, the lr3 has a few more little places to put stuff but not by a large margin.

LR4 front passenger seat on hse has more adjustment which I think is one of the biggest upgrades if you travel with someone much. The door sill/arm rest is better shaped too - specifically up to 2013. After that in the v6 they reshaped the door sill again and it's worse than the lr3 for arm rest use unless maybe for broad people.

LR4 has the AJ133 / 5.0L Direct-Injection, continuously variable intake and exhaust camshaft timing at a conservative 375HP/375lbft

I have a 2011 LR4 LUX HD with ~52K miles. Bev liked the color, I wanted a HD rear axle. LUX was part of the purchase. I do use it off road, travel, etc. Pull a 19' TT across the inter-mountain west, dry camp off washboard roads 95% of the time, run 18" wheels, spacers and 285/60-18 GG AT2's, taken it on 4WD trails (Eng Pass, no - not Silverton to Mineral Springs, from Ouray to Mineral Springs - "I wouldn't take MY LR4 up here" was the comment) and other trails.

No issues, regular maintenance. OK, I think the hood sensor had to be adjusted. The AJ133 is a great engine. Would seriously recommend a HD rear axle if you are going to use the truck.

I have to say the biggest thing I miss moving from a D1 or D2 is the storage spots above the sun visors. They were really handy.

Here's my thinking. LR3 was a complete redesign. LR4 leveraged the LR3 as a upscale and move to complete JLR power plant. Engine came from Jag. In summary I don't think early LR4's have teething issues like the LR3 did.

As I understand the engines:

LR3 V8 is a Jag engine. However, the V6 gas was a ford engine and the tdv6 then was Ford/PSA developed.

Most of the other systems are basically just the next version of what was in lr3 so I agree no "teething" issues because the systems were the same but progressively updated with worst bugs gone after first couple lr3 years.
