LR3 Steel Wheel Options

I know this has probably been gone over a million times but want to see if anyone knows a steel wheel option for the LR3? I live in Hawaii and would like to have a full mud tire set up that I can swap when I need to head up in the mountains only. Steel is cheap and durable and a good option for me. I can run the LR3 Stocks with my Nitto Terra Grappler AT from 90% of my daily driving and light off-roading but want a full mud tire for heading up in mountains for the weekend where a mud-tire is a necessity. The 20 min it takes me to swap wheels is worth it for me and I am not interested in paying the cost for the Comps from EU.

It would be awesome if I could run a 17" but I have been reading and see that's not an option. Therefore the interest is a full mud tire option on steels for me.

Any good suggestions would be great to all of you!

AFAIK 18" is the smallest possible size that clears the brake calipers on NAS D3's. If you had the TDV6 it would have smaller calipers/rotors, I have seen a few with 17s on the uk forums. I don't know of any steel wheels that otherwise fit, but someone might chime in. Good luck!

Lucky8 did a set of steel 17s w/33" MTs on their LR3 project vehicle, but I think they may have had some issues with them; at least they don't seem to be running them any more. A call to them would be the best bet - ask for Justin, he's the owner and LR3 wrangler.

Off subject, but if and when I move my family back to Oahu, we can go wheeling together! We just moved from Hawaii to AZ where my wife is from. We have a 2012 Disco4 with ProspeedUK roof rack/ladder, Tactical4x4 rear bumper w/ sidesteps and tire carrier. Picking up a Howlingmoon Stargazer RTT and Hannibal Awning in a month.
As far as wheels, I just sucked it up and got a great deal from Compomotive in the UK. Came out cheaper with shipping than from Lucky8.

I wish I could drive up to Peacock Flats with my family right now :)

I'll give Lucky8 a call. I am not opposed to an 18" steel wheel either if anyone knows the sizes etc and maker... Finding take off LR parts on island is a ********** to say the least. If that was the case I would surely just look for LR3 18" take offs and run some muds on it and swap when needed. Its more about having the mud tire capability on a set of wheels I'm not concerned with banging up on the lava rocks.

@harbinger808 That would be awesome to have another LR owner here not afraid to get on the trails with me. Peacock is a good time for sure but nice to have a second vehicle around for recovery/assistance when needed. Jeep and Yota guys are grouping up over here and don't mind an LR tagging along, especially when they see what a Rover can do without a $10k lift kit like the Jeep/Yota guys have. Good people though, just wish I had another Green Oval to cruise with...like minded you know!?!?!

There are two Defender 110's on island and neither get off the tarmac......quite disappointing to see street tires on a 110 but hey that's just me..lol When you come back to Oahu to live or visit, look me up and bring me some good mainland parts I can't get shipped here.....Hannibal, etc....hahahaha

Funny you mention the 110s... if my deal went through (long painful story) I would have had the first 110 on Oahu in 2014. Still looking to get one while I'm here in the states.
We might be back for the month of January and February since my wife has bonding leave with our new born. If we do, I may actually ship the our Disco over since it would be cheaper to ship it back and forth than renting a truck for 3 months :) Hopefully I'll have the awning and RTT by then if we do. I'l keep you posted.

A friend of mine has the Lucky8 steel wheels on his LR4 without issue. I can't recall the tire size he's running. Think Lucky 8 may be the only option available

Why not just use a set of alloy wheels for your mud tires? You're making this way harder than it needs to be. I truly off-road in Northern Minnesota and my wheels have taken a beating from rocks but they don't leak air and give me no problems. Here's the worst thing that is going to happen. (see pic) I use 18" Land Rover wheels (from a Full Size RR I think) that are rare in the US, so I'm not going to replace them due to cost and availability.

They work great for my mud tires, then I switch out to Nitto Terra Grapplers on 20" RR wheels for daily driving. (Note: the 20" wheels came with the truck, not my choice)

I think you are missing the original post of the email. My point is, finding a set of 18" LR wheels on Hawaii, all islands included is near impossible. Yes I could ship a set of take offs from the states but finding someone to pack up and freight ship is also a big task for most on the selling end because its a hassle. Ordering a set online is easy so if I find a distributor of an aftermarket wheel then my problems would be solved. I'm not down for Compomotives, just not logical IMO for my use to spend that amount of money. I would love to have another set of LR take-offs that I could beat the ******** out of, but again, finding a set here is near impossible. Finding 19" are not too hard, but I'm not running 19" wheels offroad and I do not want to put street tires on my LR. My Nittos are awesome for everyday use and I can drive on the beach, sand, mild offroad, etc... When I head up in the mountains, I NEED mud-tires. Anyone who every has been in the mountains of Hawaii will know what I mean.

See my point now?

I think you have answered your question then; 17" wheels are not currently a common thing for LR3s.

That being said given your situation you may want to take a look at other wheels with the same bolt pattern, i.e. some with Disco II's (which have the same pattern, but different backspacing and such depending on what wheel you are talking about-not to mention diameter issues for the 16"'s) would use Camero wheels-perhaps taking a look at any 17" steelies in that realm. Concerns there of course come out regarding need for spacers and clearing your brake calipers, etc.

No simple solution exists unless L8 comes back to the fray with a bonafide solution, which it doesn't seem like is in the cards just yet.

As your Nittos wear, consider grabbing a set of 20" take offs from something and throwing a new set of Terragrapplers on those to allow for 18" MTs.
