LR3 Trailer Hitch

The LR3 I bought in January came with a trailer hitch but the key was gone and the hitch was on. The shop got the hitch off and installed a new piece with/for the key/etc but it appears the part/bolt that needs to retract to fit it into the slot in the bumper doesn't want to retract far enough for the hitch to slide in. I'm thinking of just going with a Curt hitch. It's cleaner, out of the way, no messing with keys, etc. I heard though the spare tire has trouble clearing when a Curt hitch is installed. Is that just a full size spare or the donut one I have as well? Any help and answers appreciated. The hitch is primarily used to carry our bike rack, and of course for recovery, if necessary while on trails, not really doing any major towing. Thanks!

The compact spare fits fine, can't speak to the full size. I pulled my Curt hitch because I never use it and I didn't like it hanging there. Shame you're not closer, I'd trade you for that factory adapter that I could plug in the one time I decide I need it.

While I cannot find it on their site, I know that Voyager Offroad had this hitch on the drawing board. I have the CURT and it works great for the price, BUT it does hang low and does distract from your departure angle.
I do hope to replace it with one of these if it they bring this to market.

Here is the site with contact info:

Here is the hitch (as being used by one of our members on Expo- it bolts to holes already in the rear bumper. Greatly increases departure angle and reduces all drop and sway from the OEM hitch).

Hey Colin,

I had the same problem with my hitch after the key assembly thing was replaced. Your talking about the little pin on the top that won't retract, right? The only function of that part is to lock the twisty-handle thing in the open position while you slide the hitch up in. You don't really need it as long as you hold the handle twisted in the open position with one hand while you install the hitch. So here's the fix:

Just cut the little 1/2" pin off. Done. No need to spend a dime.

Hey Dendy, that is a clean one. If it's the one from Australia I've seen in the past, it's pretty pricy too.

Not from Australia, rather being produced by the folks at RoverRacks. I think it is still in testing and not yet produced for distribution, but you could e-mail them from their website I list above to determine an ETA. Seems it wasn't going to be extremely pricey.
Thanks

Actually, I believe the little pin is out too but it is the other larger piece/moving bolt that slides into the hole below that that doesn't want to retract enough to slide the hitch in and get it clipped in place. I'll take another look tonight. Mosquitoes decided to come out last night and I was getting eaten alive, even in the garage.
Dendy, I'll check with them. There was something from Australia I saw once or twice that was very expensive. Thanks!

The hitch is on my lr3 if you have any questions. I have towed with it with no issues. I also did the lr offroad ride in march with the hitch on and had no problems with the departure angle when some of the other lr3/4 popped some bumper covers. Its easy to remove also only 3 bolts.
