LR4/Discovery 4: School me?

Thanks again to everyone's sharing of info. Using the inter-webs to my advantage and searching. This should be fun, albeit a slow process.

Differentials: Discovery 4=most problems fixed, more $$$ for the HD than before. Discovery 3=expect some problems, still okay though, ARB makes lockers if you can't find HD package models."

Does the air locker cause any issues with the LR terrain response system? I'd imagine the torque transfer tech would freak out a bit. I'm hoping not, as honestly, I'd rather have control over the locker than the one that comes with the HD package.

Good to hear. I may be in the market for one in the near future and I've noticed that the HD package is very hard to find. This is great, as the HD may have just dropped off my requirement list.

While my wife likes the LR4, I prefered the LR3.
Do not fool yourself thinking these are cheap to fix if they break. However if you can find one with lower mileage and ALL warranty/ recall issues done then they are fantastic.
I regret selling my LR3 every day.
It was a 2005 and all warranty + recalls were done before I bought it.
the A Arms can go bad on these and crack, this was a recall.
also the Electronic locker on the early ones could be an issue (never had it with mine and it was original) and if it goes, it could be a new Diff ($$$).

My wife says the back seats are like sitting on boards and the passenger seat is just OK. the drivers is awesome and longest drive I had was 24 hours before I stopped.

I have driven across the US in a FJ cruiser built up and an LR3. I can tell you the LR3 every time. By far the best vehicle I owned in sense of comfort, power and overall use.
I did find at higher altitude it was not as powerful (10,000-12,000 feet) and that would be due to the massive weight of the vehicle (winch, loaded gear and full skid package) and the RRT I had.

lots of electronics on these and a good quality battery matters. but in the 5 years I owned it I did the following
Cleared the drains on the sunroof
Replaced the brakes
All fluids changes (75K maintenance)
Had the shift cable replaced as mine broke.

I installed a hidden winch and second battery and 2nd fuse block for accessories running off the second battery (to let the main one run the electronics on LR3). Both very easy to do.

Sold it with 130K on the clock
Had a suspension leak somewhere and was on the bump stops every night.
Looks and parts avaliable, I prefer the LR3.

gonna bump this thread after editing my earlier post to reflect some corrections. This shouldn't be to scare off folks from the newer models, in fact a lot of the changes that I personally and some others don't like came between the 2013 and 2014 MY's. It seems like the sweet spot for a truck that had most of the problems on earlier vehicles fixed but retained that go-anywhere, climb-anything, attitude.

For example until 2014 changed it, the 2013 models had:

5.0 V8 with a 6-speed ZF
Normal handle thing auto shifter (not a dial)
Two-speed transfer box
AMK compressor
Diffs that could actually breathe

The only major letdown is that no options had 18" wheels...
And I am still at this point unsure as to when they deleted the factory roof rails as standard, so if someone mentions that I'll be sure to add it.
