Lumpskie's 1989 Grand Wagoneer Build

^ It isn't, but it can leave you stranded down the road. If the sock on an older vehicle is clogged, it's usually a build up of fine rust so blowing it out will clear it for a short time but you'll be back to where you were in short order... Ask me how I know

There shouldn't be rust in the tank on the later GW's as they have a plastic (composite) tank. So if the sock is clogged, it's probably due to bad gas or something else going on.

Or the filler neck rusting and falling down into the tank...ask ME how I know about that...:yikes:

Sorry for the delay, you guys. I got stuck on a couple of business trips. I actually got a chance to fix the Waggy yesterday. Here's what I did.

1. Removed the access door to the sending unit and gently blew air back into the tank. Everything appeared to be free of debris of constriction.
2. Replaced all the soft fuel lines at the back of the vehicle. The old lines seemed like they were in decent shape but I figured I might as well just replace them while I was in there.
3. Checked the electrical wires at the pump. I got good voltage and ground.
3. Replaced the Airtex fuel pump with the Holley Red. I think this was the problem. The Airtex free flowed 30 GPM and the new Holley free flows 97 GPM. (and flows 67 GPM at 5 PSI) My hope is the additional capability of the pump will give me some head room on the system and I won't have to go back and replace it any time soon.

Now, here's something I did differently... Since the Holley is rebuildable, I got the idea to use some weatherproof connectors on it. That way I can remove, clean and replace the pump without cutting an re soldering every time. (In the end I decided to solder the ground and use the connector for power just because I can always replace the ground wire but I don't want to reroute the power wire over and over) What do you guys think? Am I asking for corrosion to get in there and give me issues or do you think this will work?

Good plan. Remove any sources that can cause a future problem while you are in there. It's a real fun time to have to walk out and return the next day to rescue a dead Jeep, or Scout or Toyota or Ford that had electrical problems. You have to keep that magic smoke in those wires.

Yes sir, they are weatherpack connectors. Sounds like I wasn't being an idiot then. That's a plus!

In other news... I'm moving from Colorado to southern New Hampshire. Do any of you guys know if there are decent places to explore out that way?

Quite a move! I've only wheeled in KY, but from what I've read, it sounds like the East Coast has the best Scenery, and the West has the best Views...

Your waggy is gonna be BIG for the trails here for sure!

Yeah, the Waggy might get relegated to country drive duty... or some light forest roads out there. I was considering selling my Tacoma and buying an 80 series LC for more hefty wheeling duty.

Where abouts in NH?

I'm born and raised. Got lots of family back there. Beautiful place, I was just looking for a change of scenery when i was 18 and moved my butt to Las Vegas for college. Congrats on moving to a pretty free state too!

Yea, the ZJ and XJ are about as big as I'd want on the trails I've been on.

That's good to know. Right now, I think I'll just keep the Tacoma and use it to do any narrow wheeling out there. Maybe I'll buy the new Jeep pickup, when it comes out!

Wow, I had no idea you were from there. Do you know of any wheeling/exploring opportunities out there? From what I've read, it seems like you have to be in a club to learn most of the spots... though I have seen some videos of "class 6" roads. Also, it's funny that you mention the free state thing. My new job will be in Mass. but it's close enough to the border that I can live in NH. If I had to live in Mass. I don't know if I would have taken the job!

I didn't do much wheeling back there. the issue is that everything is owned by somebody or something, ya know? I only did a little wheeling back there because I only owned my TJ one summer in NH.

And I know how you feel. I absolutely, under no circumstances, will live in MA, NY, or CA. My wife has had job offers in NY and CA that would have made us bank, but there isnt enough money in the world to make me love to any of those states and fund their ridiculous agendas and politics with my taxes. I have a bunch of family in/around Boston as well.
