IMHO, Anyone that would spend that kind dough to get a Aussi trailer sent here over dealing with Martyn and his folks are wasting $. There stuff is US made, there customer service is incrediable. How many other manufacturers do you see on line talking to folks constantly. Even helping people that have not bought anything from them. That alone is worth going with them! Rock on guys! Oh and no I do not one one of there trailers. I'm just blown away with the quality of there products and people!

Sean, I can't speak for all states but here in Texas homebuilts can be registered quite easily. Of course they must have marker lights, safety chains, etc. They are not inspected at time of registration, however. I have 3 "homebuilts", so your proposal would probably work here.

This is the crux of the issue. You have sited a State regulations. The Federal Government controls Import & Export and therefore an imported trailer must conform to Federal regulations.

It is possible to illegally import a vehicle into the USA and register it with your State. It's been done before. But people who have done so have also had the vehicle impounded and destroyed, at their own expense, by the Feds. When a vehicle is imported the importer must place a bond with Customs so insure that the vehicle either conforms to all DOT and NHTSA standards or will be brought into compliance. The bond is lost if the vehicle doesn't meet the requirements in 120 days.

I'm not trying to drive any business our way from this thread. But we have imported trailers, been registered with the DOT as an agent, and now are registered with the DOT as a manufacturer. We have always tried to do things right when it comes to importing and DOT regulations and not tried to avoid regulations or find loopholes. I’d hate for someone to get burnt big time by taking some bad advice.

No Martyn you have taken the time to answer all my question thank you very much. On the question asked by Highlandercj-7 I love the idea of the adventure trailer and wanted one but the wify makes the rules  so it was killed with no reprieve. I look at the Karavan as a hard shell tent and it even got a nod from the wify so.

We are starting to prototype something you may be interested in. It's about 2-3 months out on production, but it may fit your requirements. PM me or e mail me at martyn@adventuretrailers.com so we can discuss it further.

I looked at bringing a new US spec Karavan into the US last year and it was looking like close to $70k for the fully optioned version which was way too much even for such a cool trailer.

I purchased a new 30ft travel trailer, with a data storm F3, heaps of solar and all mod cons for half the cost. Sure that is not a off road trailer but I still have an AT as well for less total money. I fact you could also buy another vehicle as well.

So, a Travel Trailer, an AT and a new truck verses the cost of a new US version Karavan.....

If you have heaps of money, sure why not, but logic currently says it's not that good a move for the $$$

Mike, I'm with ya there. The only reason I don't have a AT is the spartinism for a family. I need the features of a Fleetwood Evolution. If your hinting of something in that kind of feature Martyn, all I can say is SWEET!
