M class Q: ML500 or ML55 AMG?

Hi Guys,

We're looking for a new "Overland Light" vehicle.

Everything we do is on roads - we don't need a trail runner.
But - it needs to be able to do hundreds of miles of nasty washboard gravel as well as thousands of miles of highway to get us there and back.

So... They question is - If you couldn't afford a G (which we can't) and you were going to consider an ML - which would you get the 500 or the 55 AMG? or would you get an older 320 or 350 with the 6 cyl?

Thanks,
Mark

500...the AMGs suspension is too harsh for my taste. 500 still gives you 302 hp which isnt much less than the 5.4s but slighter better fuel economy and a much more comfortable ride. Also parts will be much easier to come by.

Thanks - that was my thought but I've never been in a 55 so I wasn't sure. Subtle suspension is pretty important for this job.

As addictive as a 55 might be I wouldnt want to venture down even a modest dirt or gravel road on this low profile performance tires, but due to brake and fender clearance issues it would be difficult to fit something with more sidewall. You do give up 47 horses taking a 500 over a 55 though.

Believe it or not...

I decided to forego the MB in favor of an older (2003) Cayenne S!

Thought I'd try something a little different.

I'll post when I get a build going

Cheers,

I did get an '03 ML320 as a light offroader, quite impressed what that minivan can do. installed 16" wheels with 265/75 16 AT tires......

The only thing of it I miss on my G-500 is that turning radius from the ML.

What a difference that big brick looking truck can make: whenever I step into the G-wagen - I do smile :smiley_drive:

Sorry, I can't keep my rant going.....have to pack.....driving to La Paz, BCS tomorrow.

Guess, which vehicle I'm taking?
