M101 CDN2 Progress

Found my m101 back in June for $3000CAD. A bit pricey but, most importantly the tub was in excellent shape (some kind of rust proofing had been applied).

I sustained a serious head injury back in spring time and between stay at home dadding and recovery I've been poking away at my trailer. I wanted to share my progress!

I also would like to request a manual for this thing if possible! I am beginning electrical this week and that would come in handy.

Tires rotten, mismatched. Want to keep originals


Brakes seized of course, suspension rotten


#84 spindle, excellent standard e-brakes and drum hubs will fit! I can keep the original axle.

At this point I disassembled the entire suspension, electrical and tongue.


Replaced bushings, new leafs fabbed by standens

New leafs hung, painted shackles, axle and brackets.

The leaf bolts must only be snug correct? I want to avoid binding



Found these ebrakes on kijiji for $50. No parking brake oh well...Tidied up that spindle.


Found these shocks that fit at Napa. PN# 94038 if your curious. Replaced all bolts with brand new Grade 8 bolts


Found new tires in Edmonton! Thanks to Sung for driving these down to Calgary for me. Painted the rims.


Tucked away whilst i gather more supplies

Found the Smittybilt Gen 1 OverlanderXL on kijiji with the Annex! it fits the EXACT foot print of the trailer lol. crazy lucky. The Annex is for sale by the way if anyone wants to snag that.

Next Steps:
Mount scissor jacks in the rear for leveling
Unbend (or fabricate) the tongue, remove stupid heavy leg thing, replace with a proper jack
Fabricate lid from aluminum, mount tent
Convert NOS plug to 7 pin, install 12V bulbs

Kitchen and awning set up will be contained on my vehicle so that will pretty much do it lol

Design Goals:
Dry weight below 1100lbs
Tent mounted below vehicle roof line
Keep original tires for better economy
Tailgate? I dunno, don't really want to mangle it.
Want to keep it as original as possible, for the sake of heritage you know...

Wired the 7 pin today. I decided to use the existing military grade connectors as they are excellent quality and if anyone ever wants to convert this back to military 24V they can simply plug in a 24V harness.

You might want to consider pipe mount jacks instead of scissor jacks, you’re just going to tear them off.

Hiya, sorry I missed your response. I've been in over my head. I bought my tires from Sung @ iltisparts.ca. They were not cheap but it was cheaper to replace the tires than get entirely new rims plus tires.

I also think that a narrow tire is much more functional for me as I mostly drive on highways, logging roads and the occasional dirt trail, never really find myself on sand so I don't really need a super wide tire.

Update:
The trailer is presently in the hands of a local fabricator. I generally would do this myself but due to my injury and the loss of my shop space a couple years ago, I just outsourced the work to a reputable builder. They've been really great to work with so far! Notice the adjustable tongue

Quest Fabrication did a fantastic job on the additions. Going to pick it up on Thursday. We're on the home stretch here. Got my tow vehicle set up for towing. Had to wire everything from scratch so that took a while.

So anyway, I started blasting...



Anyone know why my trailer brakes are locking up under hard braking (no load) is that supposed to happen? Hope i didn't wear a flat spot in my tire

This was my idea for stabilization. Would do it differently next time...I probably just need new jacks


Options for couplings is always good, ball hitch is safer for highway, lunnette better for off-road.

One of these days I'll find one of those overpriced off road couplers. Max Coupler and Lock n Roll are very hard to come by in Canada. Been trying to keep my costs down (Still unemployed), these two cost me a whopping total $25



Treated the entire sandblasted trailer with CorroSeal and painted with exterior paint.




I had the lid powder coated, it turned out much much lighter than I expected (was going for a gun metal grey)...Primer grey it is then!




Loaded and took her for a test trip!

Feels great to finally get to this point. My ability to work on this was limited by my injury, most of the time I was only able to put in an hour or two, but it gave me something to focus on and feel good about. My kids loved this first trip to Dinosaur Provincial Park, that made it worth every minute spent on this project.

The bushings were provided by Standens, who fabbed up the new springs for me. I'll go back through the paperwork and see if I can find a PN for you
