M101A3 questions/ build thread

Long time lurker here.

I recently bought an M101A3. Interestingly enough, previously owned by two different E.P. members. I am the third owner since it left the military base. Unlike most A3's this does not have the flared fenders. I assure you that it is an A3 though, because the axle had the feature where it rises up in the middle for more ground clearance. FWIW, the plate says A3, but I understand that sometimes the plates can get moved around between trailers.

I really lucked out on getting the trailer. It was only 20 minutes from my house, and has had all the work done to it that I would have wanted.

Previous owner(s) set it up for a max coupler, removed the heavy axle and replaced it with a 3500 pound one, converted to 12v, installed a nice tongue box, and last, but certainly not least, they installed a nice cap from a pick-up truck bed. The cap will afford me security, because the doors lock, and it will act as a base for my RTT.

As far as future mods go: I plan to install a RTT, add license plate lights, and figure out some sort of way to mount a quick add/remove table to the side. I have access to unistrut at work, so the table should be a piece of cake. I am on the lookout for a nice piece of wood, or perhaps reclaim a piece of a kitchen counter from a remodel to use as my table top.

I will add lots of custom touches to make it "mine". But nothing major to the trailer as most things have already been done.

A few questions for the members here:

1. I am thinking of dumping the roof rack since I probably wont be able to mount the RTT on the rack as it is, and some stress cracks are starting to appear in the rack as well. Any reason why I would want to keep the rack on there?

2. Do I have a non factory tub on my A3, or were some actually made with the fender set-up I have now?

3. If I get rid of the roof rack, I will need two or three bars to mount the RTT on. Since I am simply going to mount the base/foot of the bars "flat" on the roof, I think I can simply come up with a home made solution as opposed to buying a Yakima or Thule part. In other words, I am not afraid to drill some holes in the roof, unlike most car guys who wouldnt want to shoot screws through their factory roof. So can anyone point me toward a "home made' roof bar set up that might fit the bill to mount a RTT on?

I sell electrical supplies for a living, so I have some ideas from the electrical end, but there might be something better out there to make a cross bar with some pipe and two feet.

Thanks in advance!

Here is a "before" pic.

I have an A3 with an A2 tub and that appears to be your combo as well. The boys in the yard definitely just used what they had and hybrid combinations sometimes get made.
To be completely honest mine is actually an M116A3 that had an A2 bed mounted on it to create my trailer. The trailer and bed I think are like 30 years different when it comes to manufacturing date.
In the end it doesn't really matter.

I'd probably keep the rack and reinforce it if that is what you want in the end... Seems like a lot less work than starting over?

That rack and structure seems pretty stout though... I'd see if you can find any info on that topper and see what it is designed to hold?

Neat trailer and topper. Have seen a few trailers with 116A3 chassis and 101A2 tubs. They looked bro-dozer-ish with the wheels sticking out past the fenders. I dont think that is what you have. Not sure what you have as the 101A2 tubs I have seen did not have the flared supports inside the tub or the hoisting u-bolts in each corner. The frame also looks 101A3ish to me.
What is the distance between the fenders inside the tub? Track width?

I had a few 116A3 flat beds that might have been similar. They had less than 4' between the fenders but did have the offset axle. They have been sold or else I would go out an take a closer look.

I like the look of the flare less trailers. nothing to snag.
As others said they were cobbled together with what was available.
Table wise I mounted two 1 1/4" hitch receivers under the tub and it makes a great insert for a table.
Great little trailers. Post up your results.

Come to Vegas and I can give a set of bolt on fenders to make it look like a A3 bed! Lol. I bought 3 at auction all m116a3 two had bolt on fender extensions and the third was welded.

Now that I think about it, the flatbed I described did have the bolt on fender extensions. Will see if I can find a pic.

Chassis was definitely a 116A3. Wondered why it was narrow between the fenders....guess it was an A2 bed with fender extensions.

Still not sure what the OP has. Maybe a late model A2 on a 116A3 chassis. Guess the original axle could have been wider than the one that is currently on it.

Measurements are:
45.5" between the wheel wells
Overall width 72"
96" long

So is it a 1, 2, or 3?

Yup, sounds like an A2 tub. First time I have seen one that looks that similar to an A3.

You can tell if the chassis is an A3 measuring the channel used to make the square base/frame of the tub. All of the A3s I have seen were made of 4" channel while the A2s were 3"

Emerson, your trailer looks like it might be an A2 tub/and A2 frame with an A3 axle.

It has am m116a1e1 data plate and an m101a3 plate (so you are probably right), it also has the bigger spring packs that match the a3 axle (6 leafs I believe)... I'll measure the frame though.... she's quite the mutt.

Update, finally got the RTT and awning mounted. I had a nice ladder rack on the topper already. However two aluminum welds had broken. It all worked out because the tent would have been mounted a bit too high anyway. So I removed the ladder rack and used the square tubing from the rack as a base to mount my unistrut on. I used flat alum bar stock to make brackets similar to what came with the RTT.

Made what I consider to be a pretty cool mod: Made a shower/toilet enclosure. Bent a piece of 3/4" Electrical Metal Tubing (EMT). I installed 1" brackets on the roof of the unit so the pipe would slide in easy. Bought a shower curtain and some rings. Total investment of about $20. obviously I wont travel with it installed, takes all of 20 seconds to put the bent pipe in the brackets.
