The 101 weights about 1,200 lbs. empty (I think??)

Close and it depends on the mfr and yr. I had both a M105 and a M101A1back in early Y2K. My old M105 weighed 2750#s empty. My old M101A1 weighed 1375#s empty. I actually just purchased another M101 through gov't sales but it'll be a few more weeks as they have to do research on the End Use Certificate I had to fill out.

You may want to rethink about the M101. Tires are 36" tall. The drum brakes are massive and probably weigh 90#s each themselves. The axle tube also is hefty. The box itself is rather large also. It should be 4.5' x 6.5'. I suggest you replace the axle and tires with something with less weight and rolling mass.

If you swap out the axle to a 3500# with jeep sized wheels, drop the huge landing leg roller thing you will drop some serious weight. I was looking at one to use the frame as a start point for a smaller box that would resemble a m416, just longer with a tailgate. Just haven't found one for the right price near me..

I've had my M416 with stock pintle hitch up to 75-80mph on the road. the only issue you'll have with a pintle is noise and a little added feedback at lower speeds on rough terrain from the slop in the hitch. at highway speeds I couldn't tell any difference between the pintle and a ball hitch.

probably a good idea to swap springs too. you'll loose some weight and have a better riding trailer as you won't be carrying as much weight as it was designed for. no need for 1 ton springs on a compact truck.

That is what I did with my rolling M101 frame.
End result of a boat tongue, Dexter 3500# axle, sprung under axle, new car tires (should have gotten trailer tires), and some old Ford rims with '0' offset. I kept the stock springs.

I've drilled the frame to relocate the axle 20" in 5" segments depending on the weight of the camper and tongue requirement. Once I finalize weight distribution, I'll be adding shocks.

Found a picture of my old M105 from back in winter 01. It held a cord of wood with no problems.
