The 6x6 rides soooo much better than the 4x4
For what it's worth, I'm presently on a trip (3000 miles so far) in a '1078. In the same convoy is an M-1083. At last fillup we compared fuel usage after same exact mileage, same driving conditions, road, temp, etc, (well, it's in a convoy!). We had both filled up at the last fuel stop. I needed 20.5 gallons to fill mine. His '1083 needed 45. Differing conditions were my 3116 CAT engine (mechanical), and his CAT C7 electronic engine (heck of a puller), and he didn't need to slow on the hills, and I did.
Based on direct comparison, the 5 ton would cost twice as much to fuel.
The M-1078 rides smooth too.

What is the difference in the mechanical 3116 and the electronic c7... Are they talking about ignition and timing??
Ozrockrat, thanks for explaining
Does the transfer case bolt on to tht Allison? So a 2spd T30 could be attached? That, Detroits, high spd gears and 14.00R20s would make it perfect.

Meritor's own literature states a NoSpin is optional on the FMTV axles.

The old one has less things to fail. The new one gives more information on condition if you have the ability to read it. Asking that question is a good way to start a brawl in a pub full of earth moving guys.
My preference is the new one. Easier on my old body to diagnose problems and it gives more power for the same displacement. For an expo rig honestly any diesel truck prior to 2006 (USA emissions compliance) except anything actually made by Ford (the International 7.3 is fine) will do the job. Some will just do it quicker up the hills and be able to give you feedback in the cab as to what is happening. Some of the older diesels will just about burn dirt. The electronic injection ones need good clean (very clean) fuel.
The increase to the HP on the 3116 can be done with pump changes and larger injectors for minor improvement and usually a bigger turbo for larger increases. The C7 if you need a reasonable bump its just a code change (more HP may need larger injectors and ultimate power needs a different turbo)
As an example, we used to pull a 50ton dozer on a lowboy using a Diamond T with 24 gears and 140 HP Cummins (140 new but I think a few ponies had escaped over the years). It got us everywhere we had to go but with a top speed of 45 mph (empty of loaded). To get up to speed took every gear/split (no syncro's) and took a long, long time. If someone would of suggested we get the 450 HP 8.3 Cummins with an automatic transmission (Allison only) I would of broken their legs to make sure they couldn't escape with the keys.
On one set of our haul trucks we had the ability to bump them from 450hp to 800hp via gps and a sat link when they got to a mountain range. When they hit the top they were restricted back to 450. That cannot be done with mechanical injection.
