M416 Lid Dimensions - Looking for So Cal M416

I'm thinking about putting a lid kit together. Eventually, I'll need to find a local M416 to measure off of.

I've got the design fairly figured out, but am wondering how guys prep the trailer for the lid. Do most put a square channel over the trailer tub lip, to set the lid on?

Can someone please post the dimensions of the top of an M416?

Anything else I should be thinking about, in regards to M416 lid design?

Lid will be similar to this, but with a square end cap on each end.

Most M416 upper rails are so bent up and out of square that it might be tough to get an accurate answer. I ended up squaring mine up with angle iron, and most people seem to do something similar. I'd be happy to get you my dimensions, but they aren't anywhere close to the stock measurements.

I'm only looking at costing info. right now, so measurements within an inch or two would be what I need. Outside to outside of tub.

Rough but try this. It is from mine before I put a lid on it. And yes I too used angle iron to level it out and square it up.

What are guys paying for lids?

I'd think that steel is fine. Does anybody ever want them out of aluminum?

most of the one's I have seen are steel, as is mine by Sierra 4x4. I have seen a few aluminum but they seem to be more expensive then the steel ones. If you are going to consider building your own I would think about what type of rack if any and if you are planning a RTT. Load will play into design. Also I would make the lid as high as possible as the trailer fills up faster than you think. Lastly I would decide how the lid will open and plan on strut location as you build.

Just my 2 cents.

I swear that I read somewhere that the weight difference between steel and aluminum is negligible due to the need for thicker material with aluminum. I'm not sure how true that is. I just skinned my lid tonight with 14 gauge steel and it's pretty heavy.

If anyone is interested in doing a lid kit in fiberglass, I probably don't need the mold for this one anymore...
