M416 trailer initial build help

I know this has been done, however i am having a hard time finding information on it. I want to convert my m416 axle to a 5 on 4.5 hub. I want to be able to match my jeep bolt pattern while retaining the hand brake. Can someone please point me in the right direction.

Also, when removing the leaf springs i discovered the back right shackle on the spring side is reverse threaded, no problem. I, however, want to convert to standard H-shackles. Do i need to drill out the mounts or do they simply press in ? What shackles can I use?

Next, the front spring mount (frame pivot), my bolts were pressed into the frame bracket/spring. Do I HAVE to use press in bolt or can I use standard grade 8 bolts for this point?

Lastly, i have noticed, while browsing builds, that some of the m416 trailers have 3 cross members while others have 2. Mine has one half way between the axle and the front of the frame and one half way between the axle and the back of the frame. What gives?

The older trailers only have two crossmembers, while the newer ones had three. The are differences in how the tub mounts to the frame as well. The one I had with two crossmembers used 3 bolts at the top of each fender (most use 1), and it had 4 tabs on each side holding the tub to the frame (most have 2 on each side). They also used 3 tabs on the front that the later tubs didn't have, and no bolts through the crossmembers themselves. The pictures in the original manual show trailers with only 2 crossmembers so I'd assume that is the early version.

I agree but did someone add the pockets to the outside of the frame. Interesting.

So....as far as changing the hubs. ... anyone done it? Got part numbers? When I do bolt a tub to this frame I plan to have 2 supports underneath that bolt to the two cross members as well as several tabs around the perimeter. Like 4 per side and 2 on front and back? The supports underneath will be welded to the floor and bolt to the cross member in 1 or more places.

There are so many good posts on here with all the info and part numbers you need. I have done two myself. AmyJeepParts and a few other online surplus sources are a great start. The manual can be downloaded for free.

I know I have read numerous builds here that the M416 and like trailers have axle swaps to give the 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern and wheel adapters from 5 on 5.5 to your desired bolt pattern. I didn't change out my axle so I didn't take notes but I also have a frame that started with only 2 cross members. The c channel frame you have is a better start then the 52 M100 I started with with an L frame. I did add a 2X4 metal cross member and made my frame C channel by welding in angle iron. It didn't add a lot of weight but it was night and day in frame rigidity. I bent up a 16 gauge steel for a new floor. I welded the tub back as it was originally done on my trailer.

Yes there are upgrades for your shackles. you can buy early jeep shackles and bushing kits for your application. 4wd.com is one source.

Kflash.... you saying you know of someone that has done a huh conversion w/o spacers and w/o changing entire axle? I've been unsuccessful in find info. Can you point the way please?

I don't remember ever seeing a hub conversion. Most of us either change the whole axle to get the pattern you want or get spacers/adapters. I used my original axle as it matched my CJ. When I went to my Tacoma I ordered adapters from USWheelAdapters.com in Aurora, CO. He is familiar with the M416 axle and make you what you need.
