Mahindra sighted in Denver!

I'm up in Summit County and we see a lot of test vehicles here every spring thru fall. Saw the Mahindras (both biege I believe) running around last fall. I talked to one of the folks riding along -an engineer I assume- at a stoplight. He said they were running 130 or so horsepower if I remeber correctly. Not bad for a small diesel. Saw one again back in February/March - might have been the one described as hauling mats toward floyd hill.

Looks like they are being imported thru a dealership in Texas.

Mahindra pickups that I saw while

recently in India were garbage. I rode in a Mahindra Scorpio (SUV version of the pickup) and it's interior was all cheap plastic and not very nice. I mean it just felt cheap and poorly built. The motor sounded good, small 4cyl. diesel. The exterior styling was hideous, in my opinion.

The pickups that I have been seeing all over the interwebs that they appear to be possibly importing here to the states are the cheaper/crappier of two trucks they make. They make a real nice Maxx Truck that I also rode in. Very, Very capable off road machine. Basically, it's a Jeep knockoff type vehicle. It looks like a Jeep front end, but with a pick-up bed and they come in both two door and four door models. Both have diesel motors. I was at a coffee estate in southern India and we visited a Hindu temple on a mountain top. There were 30, yes 30 of us in the bed of this little truck and we drove up basically a very rocky two track to the temple and the truck never skipped a beat. The thing drove almost as if nothing was in the bed. And on the road, this thing would fly!

The main difference that I noticed was that the trucks that are like what they plan to import here are "nicer" or more plush for the average commuter. The Maxx Truck was more utilitarian, more for commercial or farm work.

Anyway, just my two cents.

I've been seeing a 4-door version on my morning commute just this last week. That makes two of them, now.

Remember that the US interior and exterior will be different than those exported to the rest of the world.

I pulled into a rest stop today to get a bottled water from the cooler in the bed of my truck and I saw a Mahindra parked there. I feel bad as I noticed he was about to pull out and I waved him down.

He was a test driver for the truck and has put 60k on it so far. He said there are 5 test drivers in and around Denver and that they have 3 Indian engineers on hand going over the trucks daily just to make sure everything is right. He said they are hoping to start selling them towards the end of summer

The truck itself is a little bigger than I was anticipationg. The truck he was driving was a crew cab short box and the interior looked fairly roomy given the size of the truck. The interior is not flashy by any means but it's not ugly, just simple. It was an automatic and it's a center console type shifter on it. The front seats were buckets but unless the seats had an armrest built in there wasn't one in that truck which for me would suck. The back seat looked as if I could fit and I'm 6'4" and 240lbs. I'm sure it wouldn't be the greatest in comfort but I could have fit.

He said he really likes the truck overall, said the little diesel is a great engine and he really likes the tranny. He said that the suspension wasn't the greatest and that the bumpers were not that stout. It looked like he was actually using it, I could tell he had driven it over some ranch roads.

All in all I was impressed with what I saw. I'm sure that if it makes it to market somebody will make some suspension upgrades for it.

Best part, he gets over 30mpg

Saw it again...

On my way to work on Monday, 05/17. I was heading East on 22nd near Broadway. When it turned I noticed it was a double cab, which makes it different from the single cab truck I saw a few months ago.

Couldn't tell if it was a 4x4 or not.

The Mahindra trucks are being tested by an outfit in Aurora, somewhere off Colfax and Chambers Rd.. I see ten or fifteen aday, probably the same ones, just go to that intersection for 10 or 15 minutes you'll see one go by. If you get a chance to see a crew cab note the placement of the muffler under passengers floor board, behind the right front tire. Not the best place I'd think.
