Man turns Ford F150 into Hummer H1

Autoblog has the story of a Canadian man who built a Hummer H1 replica out of a 1987 Ford F150 chassis, a Powerstroke diesel from a van, a pile of spare parts, some sheet steel and a welder. Four years later, the result is pretty convincing (no portal axles, however).

The original message thread detailing the build, which includes 900 posts, is at Fullsizebronco.com. The participants there have joined in the project by raising funds and finding parts for the build.

Thanks for the reminder. I was following the thread about 2 years ago when had just acquired the Powersmoke for it. It seems like he's made some good progress since then.

That's right up there with the guy who built a Lamborghini Countach in his basement!

Although, I guess the Lambo gets the nod since he built the entire thing, frame included from scratch!

Still, that H1 is pretty slick! :)

For all the time he put into it he could have had several original H1's if he had sold his welding skills for cash. Awesome work though.

It is a 4WD. I recall a stretched flat fender Jeep tub that a guy built with the same method, though he used much smaller tubing for the frame work. Having ridden in a HMMV (Not an H1) I can't imagine wanting one that badly, but to each his own.

Now he should make it 4wd........seems to be missing a few parts...but a awesome replica!

It has a front diff (see photo) with manual locking hubs but were you wondering if it had a transfer case?

It does have a transfer case!

I did something similar for some investors trying to get in on the Hummer market pre H2. I built one on a brand new F-350 chassis with a 7.3 powerstroke that now resides somewhere in Florida, I cruised all over the USA with it and it was great. The rest were based off of a GM 3/4 ton chassis, all aluminum body, 37's, EFI 383's, all power accessories and A/C, very nice interiors. You can see pics around the web if you look up Catvee, you'll probably find out why they are no longer around either (the bad stuff) I was the designer/builder for them.
