Managing photos with your computer - best recommendations for storage, software etc?

Personally I like top keep things close at hand. I also prefer mirroring to backups. I would use something like this: Raid 1

A lot to spend for photo storage! Now if you are in the business then that's another thing. A WD 2TB drive is only $200 or so. I copy all photos to DVDs for long term storage and show/tells on TVs.

DVDs are not a permanent storage solution. DVDs degrade with time.

RAID is an availability tool, not a backup solution.

I have all my data RAID'ed but I still backup to external HDDs that go into fire safes.

My photos are a waste of ones and zeros to other people but to me they are priceless and I treat them as such.
