Max Couple Question

Guys wanted to get those who have run the max coupler to take a look at these pictures of a max coupler I just received. I also sent the same pictures to the company I purchased the max coupler from.

What concerns me is the gold colored nut that is on the bolt. It does not resemble the crush washer that is listed in the directions and what I have seen online. The first 3 photos are the max coupler I received. Photo 4 shows a picture I found online.

I don't believe that gold nut is safe as it is too shallow (not enough depth or "height") to have a substantial bite on the bolt threads. I personally would not use it.

I believe this is the new and improved design. I just checked mine and it is identical to yours

The "gold nut" is the crush sleeve (not crush washer) listed as #4 in the instructions.

Hello everyone thanks for the quick response,,,got this note from Chris at Kilby. Looks like the new gold nut is the new crush washer.

Bolt that thing on and enjoy!
That is the way they are leaving my facility now.
Pretty much pre-assembled and ready to go.

Thank you,
Chris

Good info, just looked at mine and I do not have that. Mine is about 3 months old. Enjoy, I love my max coupler................

Does that new crush sleeve thread into the coupler instead of slipping in?

What is new and improved about the new version?
Kilby has never responded to any telephone or email message regarding the original or new and improved version.

Basically now the crush washed is pre-tensioned from the factory so its truly a bolt on application.

Mine was the same way when I got it a few months ago. The new design not only has a different crush washer as has been mentioned but it also have new "seats" on the vehicle side of the hitch for the poly bushings to rest on.

.

If you subscribe to TCT Magazine, you can read my coupler comparison article in the latest issue where I looked at the Lock-n-Roll and the Max Coupler. It's the "Year in Review 2014" Issue. It's a free subscription for the online version.

Thanks for the link to your review. So do the new "seats" make it easier to connect?

I've got to purchase one of these soon, and I am currently leaning towards the Max Coupler due to it's simplicity and the "quiet" factor.

Great trailer by the way, will be borrowing aspects of your RTT rack designs for mine!

Yes the "seats" make it a bit easier to connect vs the older version but I still think the lock-n-roll is the easier hitch to connect. As I said in my review I think both couplers have their pros and cons so you have to make some trade-offs. IMO there were a few more pros with the Max Coupler.

Adam thanks for the insight....do,you have a link or description of your tire carrier on the trailer in the TCT article...looks like a swingout.

Yes it's a new improved design. The older version worked well, unfortunately the assembly instructions were not being followed by everyone, so the product had to be "idiot proofed". All that has to be done now is to bolt the coupler onto the draw bar. This would seem to work for the people with the mentality that you read the assembly instructions after you have damaged the product.
