I was running the 285/75/17 toyo open country MT's on AEV wheels on my stock carrier.. and I can say it does not work.. not off roading it but the expansion joints on the highway would bounce the jeep bad and the carrier cracked bad.. These mounts are not made for more than 32's and light 32's at that.. the toyo's are 8-ply's and very heavy tires.. took about 50K miles of road use to get it to crack.. but I was not planning on using the jeep for commuting but the company took away my company truck.. I'm going to go the expedition one route.. or build one like it..

I guy I wheel with runs a 35" on a stock carrier. He has not had any issues yet but is very careful.

Also the AEV tire swing arm is available separate and can be used with the stock bumper and still integrated with the tailgate.

BadPunkin,

The AEV swingarm can be used with the stock bumper?! That would be awesome from a cost perspective and I like the idea of a "sleeper" Jeep. Not many exterior modifications and great performance. I'm going to have to check on that before I submit an order to ExpeditionOne. Thanks for the info. Anyone else heard of this?

yes the AEV arm will mount to the stock bumper. You just drill a hole to allow the spindle to go through and the spindel actually mounts onto the frame not the bumper.

As for what ize tire on a stock gate...i ran a 35 km2 that was on my bumper and the stops on the gate and it still ruined my hinges. At near close, the gate moves up and down almost an inch. The hinges are wallowed out and cant be fixed except for new hinges. Others have had the spot welds pop from the weight of the 35"+ tires. Some get away with it.

I run a 33 on my stock gate. Normally not an issue at all...unless you catch any air in your jeep. This was not planned and I was not going over 20mph but hit a hard bump just right while wheeling some dirt roads and and my back end landed pretty hard. The post the door latched too was bent down so the door would not shut completely after that. Had to bend it back into shape :) Like I said not planned but my 6 year old loved it!

Mine failed with 33s. The studs that are pressed in began to pull out. I also started to have problems with hinge alignment when it closed.

NO WAY would I hang a 35 on the stock tailgate.
