Hi, Would anyone know how much boost, torque & power you can safely get out of a converted 1994 4d34 engine in an FG?
It has Intercooler fitted also so boost air going in is much cooler.
Cheers

Gday,
at the extreme, depends if its a factory turbo or not (mainly for rod strength, oil squirters, etc). these engines are very similar to the little cummins 4BTA. theres a forum dedicated to these motors (found the site; http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/forum.php), some guys pushing around 40psi in a daily driver. as long as its tuned correctly, and not being overfueled for given boost (ie exhaust combustion temps too high), then 20-30psi boost should yeild good reliability, and (theoretically) around 220hp, 650-700nm. thats a rough ball-park obviously, depends hugely on turbo sizing, fueling, timing, air/fuel ratios etc, etc.

Mine does not have piston cooling nozzels. The most i can get out of it with the stock turbo is 80 HP & i think from memory 470NM torque.
I do have a std H1C turbo off a 4bta genset, anyone know if it will fit the mitsi manifold?
It would be nice to get at least 100+ HP reliably as i do a lot of long haul towing with weight. Does anyone know of an aftermarket turbo that would achieve this?
If im asking too much from this engine would a later model canter engine transplant be feasible?

I have a 2001 4D34T-3AT swapped into a Land cruiser. Stock is 145hp and with the stock wastegate setting it would max out at 12PSI. I now have a huge IC on it, better plumbing, 3 inch exhaust and adjustable wastegate and I get 19-20 PSI out of it. It MOVES! I would say that 200 horses is possible but mine has piston cooling. Might be worth it to get a block with squirters :sombrero:

I am using the stock turbo fitted with an adjustable wastegate. The only modifications are the 3 inch exhaust, better intercooler and piping. The Land-Cruiser also has much higher gears at 4.10 so it cruises along and sips fuel.

Injection Question

Did you modify or adjust the fuel injection pump? I know there's a pressure diaphram in the injection pump hooked up to the intake manifold. It would increase fuel injection as manifold pressure increases. Does it have the range to increase fuel amounts when manifold pressure is increased above the OEM wastegate pessure of 12 psig?

Mine is entirely computer controlled (2001 - Zexel TICS pump with Red 3 governor) so there is a MAP sensor and no diaphragm. I did not adjust a thing. Many, including a few on this forum, told me the computer would defuel and not allow such high boost numbers but it works great as-is.

Oilburner, what size pipes did you use to plumb up your IC? I think i stuffed up when i made mine as they are only 2 inch stainless.
I had to run my IC between the cab & tray with 2 electric fans so the pipes are fairly long too.
I did a test the other day & fitted the stock turbo intake manifold and crossover and got 16 psi at the manifold.
Hooked up the IC again and got 14psi @ the turbo outlet and 11 psi at the manifold!
Next test is to bi-pass the IC with the long piping still there and see what i get.
I am getting about 60-80 deg C temp drop at full noise with the IC.

Mine is 2.25" aluminum with very little plumbing length. If yours has a mechanical pump the sky really is the limit. I am having a hard time increasing the fueling on mine since it is all electronic.

What wastegate do you have on that turbo and how is it adjusted? Do you have a pyro on it? If so what kind of temps are you seeing? I wouldn't mind a few more horses in my FG. I don't currently have a boost gauge. How is your boost gauge plumbed?

It's a universal T3 adjustable wastegate actuator sourced from Ebay with a homemade bracket, the wastegate itself is in the turbo and still stock. I don't have a pyro since the fueling is still all stock. One thing to remember is there is a pop off valve in the intake on the 4D3s that pops at around 16 PSI, I plugged it by removing it and replacing it with a threaded plug which allowed me to get more boost. The boost signal for the gauge can be gotten anywhere on the intake, I drilled and tapped a hole but there should be a spot on the turbo you can tap into, even if its the signal line to the wastegate - just put a Tee into it.

Cheers
