L,

Didn't you have different Maxxis treads last January when I met you in Death Valley? 285/75R16? What tread did you have back then? What made you change size? I'm even more curious why you changed tread patterns (maybe just for a change or a 255/85) and how the Bighorns compare to the previous Maxxis tread? Noise? Grip?

I have been interested in trying g a different tread for Maxxis MT tires but I would have to get a different size than 255/85.

I had the Maxxis Buckshot, I have had them since 2006 and got about 35k miles. They wore really well and evenly until my last Saline Valley trip when I hit a pothole at high speed.

Honestly wanted a little more aggressive tread pattern. I was swapping rims also (18-16) and since the Buckshots where so quiet and dependable it was a no brainer... I actually have quite a bit of tread left on them and hate to replace them so soon but I am leaving for Moab this afternoon and wanted fresh meat if you know what I mean... looking forward to testing them out on the road and trail.

I have only had this set on for a day but so far the noise comparrison seems to be the same or a tad quieter but I believe that is only because the Buckshots and miles on them and they seemed to get louder not bad just noticable. Same with grip... I will gladly report from Tater Salad Hill.

I love this size, as I said they haven't been mounted long but they seem to be less strain on the motor which is nice to feel the renewed responsivness, previous size was 275/65-18 on alloy 16x8's and that minimal difference is enough for me to tell you that I won't be running a different size. I was worried that it would be a little more top heavy since the rims are narrower in turn making the tire a little taller but I have yet to notice much difference in sway... we will see how she fairs off road.

I think you’ll find the tires perform quite well off-highway. I have been to Moab a few times but not with the 4Runner or these treads. The initial rock crawling I did on Broken Arrow in 2007 after the ExPo Trophy left me very impressed. I'm looking forward to your report and impressions of the Bighorns from Moab!

I have been very happy with my Bighorns, though I would like it if a chip/cut resistant compound was offered in addition to the regular tread compound. This first set has been on (and off) for a couple years and I had them siped 9/32" when new. The next set I run I think I will leave them un-siped and see how they perform 'un-cut'.

What a great improvement for you to go from a 65% aspect ratio tire to an 85% ratio. Great work going to sixteens :)

Did the pothole ruin the tire some how?

I'd like to know too, since I was there with him... Fergie got a puncture on his Revos on the same trip. Guess I got lucky!

Unfortunately we may have to wait awhile for the answer. That lucky dog Louis is already on the road to Utah, for several days of fun in the sun on the redrock.

The pothole ruined my steering (replaced) which in turn ruined the level wearing of the tire.

5 psi

Really 5-psi, not 15? Wow. No beadlocks?

I have run some very low pressures without beadlocks, but about the lowest has been 8-psi with the very stiffly constructed Toyo MT.

Did/do you always air down so low?

Does the other axle not have Bighorns on it?

The othe tire is a Maxxis Creepy Crawler at 5 PSI also.

I aired down and realized that the Stauns were set at 5 PSI so I went to 15.

I took these photos specifically so you could see what they looked like aired down to 5 with a fully loaded rig.

I wouldn't hesitate to put these tires at 8-10 PSI. The grip and response to the sand and slickrock were amazing. 5 PSI didn't seem neccassary.

Yep, I have been very happy with the grip of the Bighorns.

Are the Creepy Crawlers also in 255/85R16? I was recently told they are not available in the USA in that size?

I don't believe they are in that small of a size since they are for competition use. I initially wanted those.

These also have 5 PSI in them. Have you noticed anymore cuts in your tires? This was a huge selling point for me because the casing on these tires appear to be pretty solid, on my last set (the Buckshots) I had several cracks/cuts and no loss of pressure or capability.

I put about 1500 miles on them and will probably rotate the 5th in pretty soon to maximize the life of this set.

We ran the Creepy's in 2-3 seasons of UROC, then replaced them with the Trepadors when they first came into the rock-crawling market. Great tires, we never felt lacking in the traction division. Between that and the excellent support Maxxis have us through the competitions, the Bighorns were an easy decision for me to swallow.

5-PSi on that light Jeep with such a large tire/air volume I can see.

No, I haven't noticed any more cuts in the sidewalls, just the one vertical slice I shared earlier. I do have some light chip/chunking. Next month I plan to use my Bighorns for the Nevada Trophy event and they will see about two days worth of hard use off-highway.

I already have two of the four Bighorns needed for my second set of Bighorns (unless I decide to put them back on my camping trailer). In a couple months the current/used set of Bighorns (currently 14/32") will get kicked down to my old F350 for off-highway/hunting use, and a new set of Bighorns will grace the 4Runner's 'mud tire' wheels.

Yep ☺

Also in Maxxis' favor is that they were quite helpful/responsive (after we finally stopped playing phone tag) when I was shopping for a nearby source for their Bravo AT in 255/85 recently for a friend's trailer.

In addition to all the positive comments on the Bighorns, I'm maybe most impressed with how well they balance and run down the highway for an mud terrain tire.

It's going to take quite a bit for me to switch brands that's for sure. Oh, and no cuts or chunking.
