Last week I went up to Northwestern Colorado (Northwest of Meeker) for some 3rd season elk hunting. Unfortunately (for us - fortunately for the elk!) the only elk we saw were the ones we almost hit crossing the road when returning to camp on the 3rd night.
Had a great time, though. It was me, my brother Bruce, and his friend Scott, who drove his F-150 4x4 up there to the campsite.
We drove on some pretty gnarly roads - Juniper Mountain in particular was a very rough drive but led to an awesome spectacle. We also went into the White River NF off of Yellow Jacket pass.
While up there, we drove through some pretty rough country. At one point, we were about to cross a huge, water-filled mud pit that straddled the forest service road. Bruce was in the Taco with me and Scott was behind us in the F150. Bruce looked at the deep mud and said "you're not going across that, are you?" I smiled and said "sure, I've been through worse!" and plowed right through it, throwing mud everywhere. A half mile or so later was a deep water crossing, and again Bruce looked nervous, but it was nothing like the water crossing we did on Medano Pass back in June, so I went right in (of course, I also knew that if I got into trouble I could always run a strap back to Scott...)
Then we went onto a plateau in the Piceance Creek Wildlife Area West of Meeker. Once again Bruce was astounded at the places I could take the Taco.
He drives a Subaru Impreza now (bought new in 2002) although he's owned a 4x4 in the past, an old Scout II. But after our little trip, I think he's seriously going to try and come up with some good reasons to get a truck! Who knows, another Tacoma sale might just be in the making!
