Hey, we run KC Sprinters here in KCMO. We're a small sprinter specific garage. Couple years back I had the opportunity to buy this van and mechanically restore it. We finally did and now its up for sale.

1998 Sprinter 312D 4x4
We've had the pleasure of restoring this incredible Sprinter van. Originally purchased new in Austria and extensively traveled worldwide, this 1998 Sprinter 312D 4x4 is uniquely tailored for overland exploration and has the history to prove it. The original owners purchased this van new from MB and immediately sent it to Action Mobil to be converted. They set off from there and lived in the van for 18 years.
Key Features:
  • Off-Road Capability: Full 4x4 system with a 5-speed manual transmission, and a locking rear differential. ZG3 transfer case replaced once in its past. The low range is currently inoperable, but it's very possible it could be restored.
  • Mechanical: Equipped with an MB OM602.980 inline 5 2.9l turbo diesel engine. Recently replaced engine and transmission from a van with 83k miles imported for this purpose. We still have the original engine, and it still runs. We only replaced it because it had gotten tired overall.
  • Interior: Full buildout from Action Mobil in 1998. Motion Windows, Dometic skylight, and Max Fan with Rain Sensor. New 2KW diesel heater installed. 30 gallons fresh water with pump and outdoor spigot. Ample storage, folding bed, bench seats with storage, propane burner, and reupholstered seats. Coolmatic fridge/freezer. Front seats are factory suspension seats. Very cold factory cabin AC.
  • Off-Grid Power: 200-watt solar system and 200Ah Renogy battery.
  • Practical Additions: Full-size roof rack, light bar, and tow hitch.
Maintenance and Repairs:

Fully mechanically inspected in-house by us here at KC Sprinters. New pads and rotors, fluid changes, new Nissen radiator, driveline with replaceable u joints, yellow Bilstein shocks and struts, glow plugs, water pump, belt tensioner and belt, New AGM starting battery, and replacement coolant hoses, etc. We've combed over the van fairly well. Underside photos taken on a lift available for anyone who wants to see them.
Additional Documentation:
  • Original Purchase Receipt: From MB showing purchase price of 73,000 Deutsche Marks. As well as the receipt from Action Mobil: for 39,000 Deutsche Marks. There is a Binder showing multiple repairs/maintenance/manuals.
  • Clean Missouri state title. Vin: WDB9034621P820054
Additional Details:
  • Travel History: Visited multiple countries, including Italy, Tunisia, Libya, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Israel, Iran, Pakistan, Nepal, Australia, Chile, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and Alaska. Cupboard with coins from every visited country.
  • Year: 1998
  • Model: Sprinter 312D
  • Transmission: 5-Speed Manual
  • Mileage: 276k miles, engine and transmission 83k.We still have the parts vehicle this engine came out of if buyer would like to see it.
  • Location: Currently located in KCMO with KC Sprinters
  • Condition: Exceptionally clean with no rust, any body repairs were professionally done. This van is in remarkable condition considering its global history. Really, it's 1 of 1 in rarity for history/condition/options.
With the binder that goes with the van, I have an essay from the original owner. The end of that essay reads: "Until here this story is only 451 words. But to tell you all our adventures a million words would not be enough..."

If you combined a 90's unimog, g wagen, and a sprinter, you'd get something pretty close to this.
Price: $72,000 USD
