Thank You for the videos.

Having this afternoon to look and research I have come to the conclusion that I need to do this. The only way I will know for sure is to do it. I have the parts and what i dont have i can build. So it will be a slow go and I will have to do a detailed build up or rebuild this time. Im sure this will take me longer than a weekend. I have a lot more reading to do on balancing the fly wheel and a few other things like figuring out a Tach.

Things I need to figure out

Fuel system my tank will work but need a lot of mods.
Trans to motor needs to be hand built by me lots of work im sure.
Use stock gauges or just build a dash and pull just about every thing out.
K.I.S.S needs to be the way hear.

What kind of mods do you need for your tank? Pull the OE fuel pump out (if it has one) and replace it with R9 fuel line. Use the vent hose for your return.
You can use the stock tac with a Digital Dakota converter.

The fact my efi truck has a return line i think ill just use that but I plan to use a bigger tank.

I will be replaceing all the gauges as this was a cheap truck with idiot lights.

My better half works at a auto parts store so i can get gauges cheap and just about every thing else i need.

I do have the whole car well will when I go pick it up.

Ok slight change. Went to my parts source today (my GF's work) and was reminded that the noma runs and drives and will never do what i want it to. Then my lovely girl friend reminded me I have a 68 IH scout 800 with verry little rust a better body than the Sonoma and a back seat. A few phone calls later It will fit better to.

So meercedes 5cyl S10 nope but 68 scout yes.

and every one likes pictures so here goes.

this is what im starting with

The front sump is an issue but not a big issue. I can move things around like motor and axle also modding the oil pan is fully with in my fab skills.

i like the scout idea a lot more. much better platform to start from axle wise and you can take you time.

I dont know about the axels old drumb brake o caster. I will be changing the stock axels out for some thing better Wagoner Or scout II possably full width gm stuff as I have tons of it.

Scout II comes with 44 front and rear the 800 came with a few different axels. I have the axels from a scout II I also have axels from a wagoneer and many different full size gm.

The problem I run in to is the Om617 (mercedes) Diesel Is a high reve motor 2700-4000 3000 is the sweet spot I want to run 33-35s.

My current plan on paper is this

om617
gm sm465
231/208 doubbler

axle's are well in the air

I don't know how wide i want to be but I want it strong and stable.

choices
stock scout 800 54.75 or 56.75
scout II 44/44 60 wms
Wagoner 44/44 62.5 wms
Toyota 8" front and rear 55.5 wms
44/14 full width gm 69.5 wms

My 2 other trucks run the gm 44/14 set up I am leaning that way as spare parts are all over my yard but I also feel it may be to wide for this set up.

Any help would be great

i would see if you could do some swapping for an nv3500 and do a 231/241 doubler. 208's are inherently weak. nv3500 will give you od and a little more choice with your gears, it also light enough that the rotating mass won't kill your mileage as bad as an nv4500 or sm465 would.

your truck will be light enough you won't need anything as beefy as a sm465 or nv4500.

and stay with 1/2t axles the merc motor isn't heavy or powerful enough to warrant a 14 bolt rear. so scout II dana 44s f&r

this is the gear ratio calculator that i use. http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

in playing with the gear ratios, using an nv3500/231/241 and 4.88 gears with 35's will give you a crawl ratio of 125:1, plenty. it also puts you at 2500 rpms in od for 75 and 3500 rpms if you had to drop a gear going up a hill.

this combo is similar to what i am shooting for in my explorer as it will give the truck legs for the highway, grunt for the hills, and gears for the rocks.

I have a NV3500 problem is gearing I need to be about 3000 rpm at 65 to 70. that makes OD not useful to me. One other thing is space I have to keep it short 104" wheelbase. I have even thought about dropping the double in favor of a 205 to save space.

The sweet spot for this motor is 3000 rpm.
I play with the grimjeeper gear calk all the time

4:10 1:1 33s is 2900 at 70
4:10s 1:1 35". is 2900 at 75 witch is hwy speed
with over drive i would have to drop to 4.88 or 5.29 and I have 4.10 geard 44s and 44/14 combo

I hear your concern on weight its much mine also as the om617 is not a power house. I know it can be helped with gearing and my trans choice has me limited to 3 usable gears on the road. Lets be honest the scout will see 80% road of some sort. This is not a Wheeler just a camping hunting truck. I honestly don't need a doubler but I have 3 of them sitting in storage.
