Kerry, wanted some information about the Mercedes 911. This is also a popular oldtimer truck in germany for conversion to a motorhome. The 911 were previously used by the police and border guard and sold away for good prices. Most have after 20 years very few km.

Here is a link to a website in english that gives some information:

If you go to africa you find lots of this trucks because they are very reliable.

Thanks for that link. I had wondered if the numbering system for MB trucks followed the same pattern as the system for vans, and it does. Some of those trucks have found their way to the US. I saw a roofer using one a few months ago. If you follow a link embedded in that page, there's an interesting story about a 911 that put a piston through the block. Didn't take them very long to pull the engine.

The engine is the om352, same engine as they used in the mogs. At 130hp it will be a pig on hills, unloaded that truck is as heavy as my empy mog camper.

They are great trucks, if you can fine one with a busted engine there are lots of more power engines in the 352 family that are pretty much direct bolt ups. The turbo'ed om352A or the om366A/om366LA. One of the mog owners put a tweaked 280hp om366LA in a 1300 and he can go up 8% grades at 70mph.

What engine is in the 1117?
I've got an 82 Bluebird Wanderlodge at 30k+ lbs with a 210hp CAT 3208 and a 4spd Allison so I know all about pigs on hills.

The "11" means gvw= 11 metric tons (24,200 lb). The "17" means 170 hp, which means turbo 366A. All Mercedes trucks have this GVW/hp numerical designation. Except Unimogs. If mine did, it would be a 1526. On SBU Mogs the 1st two digits of the numerical designation is hp/10. Except they made exceptions, like 240 hp 1550s.
