Microsoft Courier slate computer

Gizmodo has a "leaked" description of a Microsoft slate computer
(a touchscreen computer that has no keyboard) called the Courier.
It's reportedly a concept under development.

The Courier opens like a book to reveal two color LCD screens.
The screens work independently, but you can pass information from
one screen to the other.

Here's the image from Gizmodo that shows the concept

Courier is an electronic organizer that holds alphanumeric data and graphic images, like a scrapbook. Features include:
-- a browser lets you view the information in the Courier as if on a series of 3x5 cards
-- information on a card can be a mixture of text, images and your notes
-- information can be moved or copied between cards
-- the cards can be indexed, searched and reorganized in several ways
-- multi-touch gestures help navigation and cut and paste
-- a stylus is used for actions that require finer detail
-- notepad and drawing programs work with the stylus
-- handwriting recognition transcribes notes into data format
-- simplified sharing of information with other Courier owners via the internet
-- there's a built-in camera for snapshots, maybe video chat?
-- GPS is used to geotag information when it's created/captured
-- the Courier could be used as a reader for downloaded content. too

Gizmodo has a series of pages that purport to be a guide to the features of the new interface
http://gizmodo.com/5381011/microsoft-couriers-swipes-snips-and-scribbles-the-leaked-interface

A pen-oriented electronic organizer like the Courier would be fun to try!

they seem to be targeting a pretty narrow market

Could be the travel journal of the 21st century if the camera is at least decent and included audio. I have been waiting for the iPad and use Macs day and night but as a travel journalist this could be the real deal for me.

I agree with Dennis. We've been wedded to the keyboard and mouse model
of interacting with computers for 40 years. Today's processors are powerful
enough to detect and act on gestures, handwriting and spoken commands.
It's time for new ways to take advantage of computer power.

This change won't happen overnight, but it's already underway. People are
excited to use one and two finger gestures like the iPhone's pinch-to-zoom.
In, say, five years, I think most computers will accept a combination of spoken
and gestured commands. "Open the pod bay doors, HAL."

While the keyboard and mouse will be with us for a long time to come, I think
alternatives will become increasingly attractive. The Microsoft Courier and
Apple iPhone/iPad will show the way forward.

I've been looking for a while now at these slates/ tablets and single form solutions.............

I even waited for the apple solution, but found it wanting in so many departments.

well this a another solution -but too late for me now !

I made a decision and have on its way a HP tablet PC

faster processor, more ram, more HD, keyboard if required and every software I have works on it....a bit more cash than say a netbook, but does everything I wanted and more, bigger screen and will still work as a flat screen GPS in car and a behind the headrest screen for my daughter

Touchsmart tm2-1070us Tablet Notebook Computer

even has HDMI out for use at home.

I'm not sure if this is for me, but I really commend the designers for thinking outside the box. I think it's a really cool design. Not the tablet I want for my vehicle, but I think it could work well for a lot of applications.
