Lets get the juicy details! What's your mileage?
How long have you had your monty?
Whats the worst break down you've had??

I've got 194k miles right now.
I've had my 96 ls for about a year and a half.
Worst break down is when i was stuck at clam beach in northern california.
I had blown off the whole bottom 2 inches off my radiator! cause? I kneeled on top of it
while doing my head gaskets. Never realized that i could have crushed some of the passageways inside.

Was stuck for 6 days! :Wow1:

I'm a bit of a Darwinist and believe in Karma, they make a great couple and are quick to point out if we aren't nice to our cars. I haven't had any issues with mine in almost 2 years of ownership, but it only sees about 4k miles a year and have gone through many services on her that were ignored by the previous owner.

204k gen2.5 . several 2000 mile road trips since I picked it up in March. Including driving it home from Colorado 700 miles, worse so far was the alternator but that died 1 mile from home, and a brake pad came apart.

Coming from a Land Rover, I would not hesitate to hop in and drive this thing anywhere only checking the oil and coolant.

There are only two things that really happened. One was on a four corners trip where my battery terminal disconnected (little did I know, thought my battery had died until some jump starts later) so that was more of a scare than an actual issue.

And recently my car overheated badly while wheeling at Rowher Flats, first time that happened in the desert. Getting my car checked out for that at the moment.

202,000 1998 Gen 2.5. I've fixed too many things to list here, most of which was proactive maintenance. Had engine rebuilt around 189,000. The only serious failure I've had in 12yrs of ownership was an intermittent crank position sensor problem. That will leave you dead in the water when it acts up. Otherwise with a fresh motor and keeping up on maintenance I haven't had anything serious go wrong. Just got back from a 4,500 mile road trip from MI to WY, UT, and CO without any issues (fully loaded). The most nerve racking part of that trip were the huge rolling hills on I-80 in Wyoming. Truck got a workout but did it all.

I almost had a major problem though recently. When I put the motor back in after rebuild I accidentally routed the wiring harness around the EGR pipe instead of under the intake manifold where it is supposed to go. So that had been slowly melting through over the past 3yrs and was about to hit copper but I found it by accident recently when I had manifold off for injector maintenance. Holy ****. That would have probably started a fire. And I don't think I am the first to experience this, I swear I ran across a thread here that talked about the exact same problem.

Why was it nerve racking to drive over our little hills out here?

Because that was the hardest I've ever worked my truck over extended periods of time. I'm a flat lander and I was a long way from home.

202k on original motor had it for couple month until i drowned it in sandy water at which point torque converter bolt came loose and scrapped a nice groove around transmission bell housing - it was by far the scariest thing i've heard driving my truck at 60mph. 6 month later i got another engine.
Now i'm about 2000 miles on that and it's running good, used to get a bit warm and it scarred me until i realized it was only a bad fan clutch.
Also had a terrible short after few water crossings, it was so bad that truck wouldn't even start - turns out bad battery, alternator and window switch formed evil alliance. Still crossing rivers all good now.
The ownership of my truck is like a rollercoaster, but mainly because due to my own fault. Even with terrible gasket between the seat and steering wheel truck is very reliable :victory:

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
210k miles and my worst failure was an aftermarket alternator. The original I ruined being stupid and I mad the mistake of going aftermarket on the alternator, it lasted a few thousand miles before shorting out internally and leaving me stuck on a steep rocky hill completely dead (the short would blow the main fuse instantly) rough day... I don't think anything else has ever actually failed, I mean I've broken some things :)

About 202k on mine, but have only had it for about 1 year/10k miles. Only thing that happened was that the battery died, but not far from home. Aside from a small oil leak somewhere and trying to figure out my unstable steering issues, it's been pretty reliable so far (*knock on wood). Good to be a part of the 200k mile club :).

Just under 114k miles.
Owned since April 14
Ran out of gas a couple of times. Break down? What is that?

and trying to figure out my unstable steering issues,

I had weirdish steering on my 98 since I got it in April, not too bad though so I kept procrastinating on an alignment. Then, about 2 weeks ago I was backing out of a parking spot, heard a bump, and suddenly the steering was completely wonky. ******? Jumped out to look and found that the right hand outer tie rod had pulled clean out of the adjuster sleeve. Thank God in Heaven it happened in a parking spot and not 300 feet above the Columbia on the Astoria Megler bridge at 55 mph, which is where I was headed next!

The ID of the sleeve wasn't really stripped, just...too big for the tie rod. Totally blew my mind. Then I talked to some alignment shop guys and they said they'll see that when someone has been jumping their car, or beasts a curb. Shock loads the adjuster and causes what I was seeing. Which makes sense cuz my rig is a salvage due to a front end accident during the previous ownership (which means I got a great deal on it). They fixed all the damage which was fairly minor, but I think the passenger wheel may have taken a hit to damage the adjuster, similer to striking a curb. Anyhoo, got all new tie rods, adjusters, ball joints, and control arm bushings going in left and right.

Just an idea to check if you're having funky steering...

As far as issues, my 98 with 140k (acquired at 131k) has needed, aside from preventative stuff like the crank bolt, a new radiator and fan mount bracket (left over damage from its accident), a gas tank (old one was cracked), catalytic converter (old one had a hole in it), and tie rods-ball joints-control arm bushings (see above post).

Wife's 97 with 181k (acquired at 150k) lost it's alternator due to leaky camshaft seals, and the blower motor threw it's bearing, but that's it. Timing belt, water pump, camshaft seals of course, but that's preventative not broken down.

I really really really wish I'd come across Monteros 11 years ago instead of blowing all that money on my stupid Discovery.....

Hey good to hear you got it fixed safe and sound! The following thread discusses more of what I'm experiencing.
