I recently stumbled upon the isotherm HWR (heater water rations) and the RAK 15. They are military crock pots made to heat water and MRE's while on the go.

Imagine driving the camping spot and already have hot beef stew ready I the pot. The lid latches closed so no chance of spilling no matter how rough the trail. Your food will also stay warm 4-6 hours after it's turned off. The only drawback I see is it requires 24 volts. The Isotherms are pretty cheap on EBay right now and I'm thinking to add one to my ambulance project. Check out the links and tell me what you think. Here is one from YouTube:
