Military crock pot

I recently stumbled upon the isotherm HWR (heater water rations) and the RAK 15. They are military crock pots made to heat water and MRE's while on the go.

Imagine driving the camping spot and already have hot beef stew ready I the pot. The lid latches closed so no chance of spilling no matter how rough the trail. Your food will also stay warm 4-6 hours after it's turned off. The only drawback I see is it requires 24 volts. The Isotherms are pretty cheap on EBay right now and I'm thinking to add one to my ambulance project. Check out the links and tell me what you think. Here is one from YouTube:

My m725 is already 24 volts but I plan on converting to a 12 volt dual battery setup. The boating dual battery switch that connects both batteries to make 24 volts may work or perhaps a 12 volt to 24 volt step up converter that can handle 15 amps. Of course it may prove to be more trouble than it is worth.

We have had a Nissan thermal cooker for a couple years, spendy, but great. Heat pot to boiling, but in thermal holder and hit the morning trails. Dinner ready when you get back. Nissan only brand we recommend.

If its 400w at 24vdc - then its gonna be 100 watts at 12vdc - so it would take 4 times as long to heat up.

The unit does include a low voltage cut out to prevent over discharge- so that would need to be bypassed.

After a little more research and your excellent responses, I think it's time to put the military crock pot idea on the back burner. I love the idea of including one in my camper project, but the 24 volt 15 amps is a problem. I'm now thinking the Shuttle Chef thermo cooker is the way to go:http://www.guidebooks.com.au/recipe20.htm

We had those heaters in the M109 Palidins to heat the MRE's up. Took forever to just get the meals warm. Usually ended up being the stash spot for "the good reading material"

That's great info BennyHana thanks, maybe that is why they are being auctioned off on government surplus sights.
