Military Gear Stowage

The question seems to come up from time to time how best to store tools on a roof rack or whereever. I stumbled across this pic I took at the 2007 Miramar MCAS air show- the Humvee is an uparmored one.

The mounts were welded up from 1/2" plate steel. It looks like one of those military field fixes that says "we thought about this before we did it, and we're not changing it."

Miramar, hugh? Must be USMC. I've never seen them there. The one's we got stuck with (Army) have the pioneer kits in a removable assembly that mounts under the rear bumper....Brilliant hugh? We have some real geniuses up in procurement.

As in they mount the axe/shovel/etc under the rear bumper????

Those adjustable mounts look pretty nice, does anyone know what they're called or if they are available through some suppler?

The entire plate over that hood seems to be quite heavy, only being used for mounting four tools on a fiberglass hood.

So do they give you a spare shovel so that you can dig out your shovel under the bumper? If so, where do you mount that one? Probably on the hood.
