MINI Cute-Ute: The Countryman

BMW is expanding its MINI brand. First came the Clubman, with longer wheelbase than the original MINI, and a single half door on the passenger side to make getting into the back seat easier. And now there's the Countryman, a small SUV version.

The Countryman measures 162 inches long, 15 inches longer overall than the original MINI, on a wheelbase that is 5 inches longer. So back seat passengers can be closer to adult size. Or fold the back seat and have 41 cubic feet of space for stuff.

Even though the Countryman is longer and heavier than the original MINI, it's still quite a bit smaller than other SUVs with AWD, like the Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V or Subaru Forester. The Countryman's overall length is similar to the Honda Fit. In other words, the Countryman will be among the smallest cars sold in USA.

The Countryman will feature a standard 1.6L gas engine (121 hp, 118 lb-ft) and a six speed manual transmission. The turbocharged S model will have 181 hp, and 177 lb-ft. and a limited slip differential separating the front wheels. There are no plans to import the MINI diesel engine to USA.

An all wheel drive system is available at extra cost. The "All4" drive uses a hydraulic clutch pack that transfers power automatically when the fronts start to slip. The All4 models will have an increase in ride height, too.

The Countryman model will be available in Europe this Summer, and in USA starting about a year from now. Pricing was not announced.

I know, you're thinking, "If I want a small 4x4 I'll buy a Jeep Wrangler." The MINI Countryman will appeal to people who like small cars, not small trucks.

I can certainly see the appeal of a car like that, especially once they are available in all-electric. Style, functionality, value and zero emissions.

If I had any kind of commute, I would certainly own something like it. Fortunately, I can walk or ride my bike to work, saving wear and tear on the trucks.

Throw some small ATs on the S version and you have a great snow car or beach buggy.
Theres a mini S running around town with BFG ATs, hella 500s and a roof rack, ever since I saw it I've wanted one.

I know the feeling. I have always been a small car guy since I had an Isetta. I do like the looks of the countryman and it is appealing due to the 4 doors. Having a kid and 2 doors just doesn't appeal to me anymore.

Is it obviously taller than a Mini? Doesn't appear to be.

If not, then IMHO it's a wagon, not an SUV. All wheel drive wagon perhaps but again, not an SUV.

Regardless, it looks 'cool' enough that I'd consider one.

I like it. Not sure I would buy one, but I like it. I think it is a much better alternative to the Clubman. I really think MINI missed it with that one. But this one looks to have potential. I love the Beachcomber though.

I still prefer the Haflinger, have been listening to the rumors of a new KTM version, which will no doubt never be offered in the US.

I like it too. I have been trying to get a small car (Mini/Golf TDI/...) for my gf but she won't let go of her BMW 325...

I guess Big is the new Small.

uh, I guess jokes are really any good if you have to explain them. That was a play on their "Small is the new Big" ad campaign from a few years ago.

Okay, so anyhow I like that white one. That looks like some competition to Subaru. Maybe just in time to replace my Outback.
