Moab, camping south of town?

I am heading to Moab next week for the first time and we are looking for a good secluded camp site an hour or two south of Moab.

Preferably not too far off the highway, but fairly remote and off the beaten path. I know there is some Natl forest west of the town of Monticello.

If you have any good ideas, they would be appreciated.

Pms are welcomed too. Thanks.

Brian,

Just head out west out of Monticello and you will find them.

The kind lady at the local Pizza shop told me so! Just stop in for Pizza and she can direct you!:chowtime:

She even said there are a couple nice lakes you can camp around.

I've also been over the top of the Mtn. from the Blanding side which is just awesome! You may find some spots up there too.

How about.....since you are coming from the south anyway......hit Blanding....then head for the Mtn. Pass in the Abajo Mountains north. You will end up west of Monticello.

Have fun!

See the dotted line heading north out of Blanding?

My favorite topic: Moab!

Watch out for Monticello and major legally-questionable speed traps; I've even decided to quit stopping in that town ever again for this reason. Some suggestions working North:
  • 37.273592,-109.678026. Anywhere North of 163 on Comb Wash Road.
  • 37.264208,-109.641978. Anywhere North of 163 on Lower Butler Wash Road.
  • 38.123416,-109.483545. Take Mail Station Spur Rd off 191 'till it ends.
  • 38.374921,-109.514358. Take Flat Iron Rd. off 191 'till it ends.
  • 38.424937,-109.473658. Sand Dunes. Behind the Rocks Rd.

if you go south of town to the mt loop road (past kens lake) there are some cool ones on the lower slopes of the mountians. They are out of the wind, good cover etc...

I didn't see any speed traps, but I definitely got a weird vibe about that place when we stopped to gas up.

The drive from 211 to Monticello through the Abajo Mountains was nice though. Saw tons of deer and huge flocks of turkey, all right off the road.
