Take the hood off, the engine will still run the same temp that the t-stat is set at. If it's 10 deg or 100 deg, the engine will run the same temperature. If it's running hot, there is something wrong with the cooling system that needs to be addressed. Re rigs putting cardboard over the front, that's apples to oranges. That's a HUGE surface area up front.

The vents will reduce engine compartment heat, not engine temp.(unless the system isnt operating properly) It really doesn't matter anyway, it just seemed that a few were asking if there was a noticeable and I was just suggesting "think about it"

I think the vents look cool, but I agree with others in that they won't likely have any effect on actual engine temps in real world usage. As installed it looks like they introduce another avenue for water intrusion, which isn't a great thing. I'm not talking about going into a deep river crossing either, I'm talking everyday situations(car wash, rain, snow melt etc). I like the style though. Maybe consider adding something to divert water ingress.

Some good explanations about the vents and their function. The theory of radiator efficiency is the most accurate one from what I know of thermodynamics. As these vents are small, it will only have a small impact on performance (of the radiators efficiency) which likely won't be noticeable without getting data (air temp before and after radiator, coolant temp before and after thermostat). The small vents were chosen among many larger one due to size constraints and due to the hood being curved while the vents are flat. Water ingress concerns are there but I've a battery cover on the drivers side to reduce risk and the passenger side is positioned so water would fall between the frame and engine. Alternator could potentially be below if the car was parked on an incline.

Will a lower engine bay temp. will reduce the temp. of your air intake at low speeds?
Seems like it would.
What effect does this have on performance?

My Ultragauge displays the air intake temp....
It certainly is hotter at low, crawling speeds.

Possibly a little. The intake air is coming in from the gap between the hood and grill (assuming all the foam there is still in good repair). Once inside the tube it travels through the plastic pipe toi the plastic airbox and then on into the intake. Lower engine bay temps could lower the plastic pipe temps a bit, but plastic isn't an especially good conductor of heat, so the change would probably be minimal.

Few pictures of several projects that we've done on the vehicle since picking it up.

Installed some hood vents the other weekend. Found the car would get quite hot when cruising with the ac on while in 4wd-lo. The vents are stainless vents found in the marine world and are very affordable.

Look up boat vents or boat louvers online. These were made by Atwood as I recall.

That's what I assumed, but if you put anything in a certain temp. long enough won't the object naturally achieve that temp. eventually?
Given this, it seems the air traveling through that temp. would increase in temp...perhaps only a bit.

Went exploring today up by Kingston trail, west of Denver. The Montero did admirably considering it was essentially stock. For what was noted as an easy trail, I'm impressed with what is listed as easy. I really should have skid plates and better tires for this trail, but that will have to wait for another day. Great time exploring and seeing what the Montero can do!

As soon as I get the maintenance done on my rig (and hopefully new tires) I'll have to go check that out.

You mentioned potentially wanting skid plates on for this one, were you seriously worried about it or would it have just been nice security.

Left for the trail at noon from the Southeast side of town, went slowly over the trail and stopped frequently to explore, to return all before 6pm. Great day trip.

Skid plates aren't a necessity for this, just nice assurance. I ended up making room for oncoming traffic in what I thought to be a very tight trail with a drop off to the right, and hit a cross member lightly due to a rock I had overlooked. No major damage, but could have been worse.

The trail was busy and after the motorcycle, there was a full sized pickup that I had to make room for to my left.

Went on a drive up Squaw Pass Road and found a short of road trail near mile marker 15. Went exploring and found several campsites and some nice scenery.

Found a nice easy rise in the terrain to see how the angle of approach functions and to see the suspension working. The front tire is nearly airborne here.

Getting the car ready for another adventure! Made room for a sleeping pad by removing the rear seats and took on another project.

On hot days the car would take a long time to cool down and it was apparent that the roof was radiating heat a little too well. Took the headliner off and noticed the center section had no insulation, while the rear had something resembling carpet juke. I cleaned off the old insulation and prepared the surfacesfui for new 1/8th inch foam insulation. After a wipe down with acetone, installed the adhesive backed insulation, with a few select pieces of 3M Thinsulate on large sections and within the main channels. Rear vent systems were also wrapped with foam insulation for good measure.

Will be testing the end result out here shortly and plan to report back after.

Tricky getting some areas! You can see the plastic was peeled off as the foam was adhered on the other side.
