Modified Shipping Container

Hi everyone,
Not sure exactly where to post this kind of question.. But here it goes. I am in the market for something along the lines of an M1078 or M1083 as get out of town in an emergency, expedition or weekend getaway vehicle.. Has anyone done a modified shipping container where it can be slid into and out of the bed? I have seen crazy prices for M1079's, Unicats, etc etc.. I was thinking something simple and under 30k that doesn't look as if it were hobbled together?

I have looked at the S-280's.. other than rare and the seller often wants a kidney and my first born that would be perfect. Does the 20' expandable shelter open up with a flat floor or is it like the 934A2 Expando Van with the pull up floors?. Im almost the point of finding a 15 foot travel trailer.. wack the axles off and secure it into the bed. But I think that would look more ghetto than cool.. lol

I'd imagine contracting for an aluminum framed cargo box to your dimensions would work. I've considered salvaging same for a more typical vehicle chassis. If it is removable pickup points and method are definitely a concern - and a good reason to go with a new 'box'. Let us know what you decide/do.

Check military salvage for Gitchner (check spelling ) aluminum communications boxes.
