Montero Gen3 (2006 Limited) Audio System questions

We have a 2006 Montero (Gen3) Limited -- has the DVD entertainment system overheard instead of sunroof.
Infinity head unit and amp, there are also a couple of tweeters on the front window pillers.

All stock.

The speakers sound distorted at pretty low/normal volumes, esp. buzzing at anything remotely close to bass/lower freq.

There car seems to have 2 speakers in both front and second row doors ... but also has a SINGLE speaker in the rear cargo area,
on the driver side wall, near an 3-way RCA AV input jack panel. Does anyone know what size and purpose the single rear speaker
is for? I'm thinking maybe its for playing a movie in the back perhaps?

Size of factory amp? ohms ?

Any suggestions on wiring harnesses used to upgrade speakers, or speaker reccomendations ... and also where is the amp ?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

The speaker in the rear is the sub unit. Are you on the FB Mitsu montero page? I uploaded the Crutchfield documents for the Gen3 sound system there and here as well. In terms of wiring harnesses crutchfield sends you Toyota ones that they say will work but in fact they do not. You will need to cut and crimp the wires.

The amp is near the rear sub. Pretty common that the sub's crap out ie: cone paper tears / disintegrates. Polk db840 is a good replacement.

I posted about some stereo upgrades on Rambo Penguin's build thread. If I knew my stuff better I'd just post a link here, but I don't. Won't be hard to find. I replaced the subwoofer and installed an Apple Car play head unit. Got the idea from his thread. It was super easy. I was actually surprised. Moved the A/C controls. I bought a certain sub from Crutchfield and it fit great. I had to modify a mount from the old sub using a cut off wheel, but you always have to do things like that with aftermarket installs. Good luck.
