Montero Sport engine --> swap into Gen1?

So, revising this post....

Basically, there are a ton of cheap $1k or less Montero Sports on marketplace in this area and they seem to never sell. Figure I could pick a runner up pretty inexpensively. Most of these are 6G72s. So basically I have two main questions:

1. i see the montero sport has the oil filter kind of "sticking out" from the front. It's tough to tell, but will this interfere with the front diff, or is there clearance. My Raider has no engine, so I don't actually have anything here to physically mock-up, unfortunately. So mostly going from photos on the internet.

2. I vaguely recall reading something about looking for a 6g72 from '99 or earlier rather than a later one. Anyone confirm this or recall what the difference is?

3. Anyone actually swapped a Monty sport engine into a Gen1?

Anyhow, thanks.

yep, I've read all about the 3.5 swap, mostly just wiring, motor mounts, and doing some modification of the oil pain. So that's definitely an option. Just curious about the 3.0 in the Montero Sport since I can find those really cheap around here (3.5 Monteros will cost me more). Keeping my options open.

If you're looking for the easiest swap, they used the 6g72 from that era in a lot of chrysler products as well.

True, but doesn’t the 6G72 need to come from a RWD vehicle for the most compatibility (dipstick tube, etc)

Really wish you had asked for a 6G72 a month ago, I just scrapped my previous engine that I pulled due to headgasket failure and scoring on crank and cams. I’m in Charlotte, too

Not completely true. You can use a fwd motor but it needs some modification. You use all of the Raider/ montero hardware, I prefer a new oil pump, seal off the mount on the drivers side, use the raider oil pan, plug the old dip stick hole and drill a new hole on the passenger side( there will be a flat spot on the side if the block). All the raider/montero hardware and brackets should bolt up. I think that's it.

Yep, that's an option as well - though in this area old FWD Caravan's aren't exactly very common either, most have gone to the scrapyard by now. Still interested in the Montero Sport option, since around here that seems to be the cheapest option perhaps. I guess nobody has pulled that one specifically?

There is a 6G72 on car-part in Remington, VA. $250

Yeah, saw that one...."missing timing belt so can't test." in other words, "timing belt broke, engine is lunched" lol....pass on that. I already have a 6G72 sitting in my shed with a spun bearing....

Mostly though, looking for one in a running vehicle,, so the engine will have all the accessories in working order. All the accessories that came with mine are pretty much junk. So just buying a cheap monty sport with everything known working, then scrapping the shell, would get me everything I need for probably $600-800 all told. Hence why I'm asking specifically about that engine here. Finding a 6G72 "in general" isn't difficult.

Gotcha, those aux items like alt, starter can add up as those yards like to charge extra for them.

When I got my engine I realized it was missing the fan when I got home. Called the yard and they said...”that’s extra...”

Actually the 1st gen 6g72 is not an interference motor, so a broken timing belt doesnt mean the motor is junk.

Good point, forgot about that - it was the 24v that was interference. That said, if someone doesn't maintain enough that the timing belt breaks, they probably didn't maintain anything else either lol.

Hey i know this is an old thread but I am in the exact same boat as you. i have the identical raider, black with gold and a dead 2.6l. I also have a parts 89 raider v6 auto that a tree fell on that came as a package deal with the 88. it must have sat after the tree and the v6 is full of water and also junk. What im trying to decide is, do i find another 4g54 2.6 (proving to be very difficult) or do I find a 6g72 and start swapping.

I'd love to know the direction you went with yours. I'm a 80 series toyota guy but have always loved the raider.

I ended up rebuilding the stock 6G72 that came out of a badly-running, rusty Raider I picked up for parts (as well as its manual transmission). To be prefectly honest, with the 6G72 rebuilt I feel it has more than sufficient power for this truck. It's not a rocket ship, but certainly gets up and goes plenty quick when I get on it (running 31s), especially rowing the gears myself. I also find it to be a very smooth engine. So I really have stopped looking into swapping a newer one in, This one works great other thatn a few electrical gremlins it took me some time to figure out.

Frankly, if you have a good V6 drivetrain, I don't know why you WOUDLN'T swap it in, since you have all the parts you need (engine, trans, TC, driveshafts, larger axles/diffs, etc). I assume pretty much all of that will bolt directly into yours, though don't quote me on it!

The engine itself is a pretty easy rebuild and the rebuild parts are pretty cheap. I documented the whole rebuild in my build thread that should be on this page as well. https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/pitchblack-rally-recce-raider-build.210863/
