Monteros on craigslist

I live a mile from where the white rig (5 posts above) is parked and it peaked my interest. I know nothing about monteros and started reading this and other forms to learn, which thus far is little. I currently own an 08 OR Pathfinder and had a 4x4 22R Toyota before that.

Please help educate me: what various trims were available for this year (1989) beside the LS. What significant differences between them? If it is still available I plan to take a close look tomorrow.

Many thanks
G

Edit: just took a quick look in person. The emblem on the driver door says RS as opposed to LS. Does the RS have a locker(s). It is a manual.

Info greatly appreciated as I'm having little luck wading through various online sources.

I don't have much familiarity with the gen 1s, but you might want to also poke around 4x4wire.com, there are likely articles with exactly what you're looking for over there.

Many thanks. I'm looking there now. Much appreciated.

$2000 for a 1998 montero with rear locker. Leather is in great shape with minimal wear (seats were covered for many years). It has 140k. No 3rd row seats. I looked at it in person, didn't do a through inspection of the outside, but noticed some rust on the passenger wheel well. It ran strong, no unusual clunks.
4x4 engaged but didnt want to disengage. 4x4 lights and cdl flashed like a short/sensor issue. When that happened, I stopped looking at it. The owner rescues higher mileage cars from dealer trade ins and sells them for about 2k. Seemed legit when I spoke with him.

(To lazy to figure how to edit the above post) This one has the electronic compass stuff. While driving, I noticed a bit of a whine, but couldn't tell if it was tires, diff or ? It wasn't really loud. Kind of hard to notice. Could have just beed driveline as the front is always turning? Just thought I'd share.

Probably needs a timing belt and will likely need the valve seals in the near future but so do all the rest of them in that mileage range, unless you know it's been done. Aside from that looks like a real clean example...especially for WI/rust belt area (I used to live there). That seat bottom looks amazing!!

The seats really were nice. The guy had a GA plate on the vehicle, but I'm not sure I trust that. Probably so the cops leave him alone as he drives around. Said it was traded in locally and I saw the same stickers on it the local auction house uses. I would have bought it, but sadly my wife spent my bonus money and the rest of my accounts are spoken for.

Gen 1 1983-1991 3.0 V6 LSD option
Gen 2 1992-1997 3.0 V6 SR model had Locking-Rear
Gen 2.5 1998-2000 3.5 V6 SR model had Locking-Rear
Gen 3 2001-2002 3.5 V6 IRS (all models) and Traction Control system (not sure which models)
Gen 3.5 2003-2006 3.8 V6 IRS (all models) and Traction Control system (not sure which models)

I have a 1990 RS Montero LWB (Long Wheel Base 4-door) with limited slip diff.

No Gen 1s came with factory lockers.
RS and LS Gen 1 models with bouncy seats also came with rear limited slip diff.
Gen 1s with bullet-proof aisin auto 4-speed trans, can go over 400k miles
All LWB Gen 1 and 2 have solid rear axle and coil springs, in front have torsion bars and IFS.

Mine has 224,000 mi. right now and drives very nice.
I abuse it offroad.
I sometimes wish I had lockers/traction control, but anywhere I can't get without lockers I probably shouldn't be anyways.
When this Montero dies I will upgrade to Gen 3.5, it is supposed to have the best traction control system of any 4x4 (better than land rover).

Correct me if I'm wrong,

The 4-cylinder was in SWB only.
Has leaf springs in the back.
Called Dodge Raider, not sure if any 2-door Monteros actually have Mitsubishi badge in USA (could be wrong).

In the rest-of-the-world market, there were LWB, 4-cyl, leaf spring models too. Similarly, all the diesel models are 4-cyl, even the coil rear spring models.

The Mitsubishi Montero was introduced to US in 1983 as a SWB 3-door hardtop. All wore the Mitsubishi logo.

The 3.0L V6 was not in the USDM until late 1988.

Please research a little before you discount the roots of the marque.

I wasn't trying to discount anything. I have the wikipedia for Pajero bookmarked on my browser and look at it all the time. I don't know how to research exact Mitsubishi models from so long ago.

Thanks for clearing up the details of the SWB.
