I remember when I thought our Sport had lost a head gasket, it was just the infamous coolant bypass pipe leaking, causing a milkshake to form in the overflow bottle. I was advised at the time by a Mits expert, it was really hard (but possible), to ruin a head gasket on the 3.5/3.8 series motors.

In this case, he would have oil in coolant, but no coolant in oil? Would it still show signs of overheating if it was just the coolant bypass problem?

The ticking lifter syndrome mentioned here is manageable, usually a result of the rear cam o-rings and/or front cam seals leaking, starving oil in the top end, and damaging some of the lifters. I've done this repair on our '03 Sport successfully, while not for the faint of heart, it also is not a terrible job. Maybe there is a deal here if the price comes down?

So I know we're mostly hunting full size Monteros, but I keep seeing this one, sleeping peacefully on a used car lot, as it is the identical twin to my wife's Sport, except 4WD. It similarly equipped to the Montero Limited, has the 3.5L engine, leather, same infinity stereo system, moonroof, etc. Sport fans take note... and I'm also fairly sure all Sport Limited's had the LS rear differential.

I wouldn't mind a '99 with a locker...
