Monteros on craigslist

Has anyone looked at the blue Gen 2.5 in Ontario? I'd started looking at Gen 3s, but...

I talked to the seller on the phone but decided not to pursue it because he wasn't straight forward about the title/smog status when I asked him. He purchased it at an dealer auction a bit over a week ago. It needs to be smogged and has late fees on the registration. The car has failed smog multiple times in the past according to carfax. Be sure to get the seller to smog it before you agree to anything. He wouldn't do that for me so I decided not to pursue it.

I am talking to the seller of this one which I am interested in. Timing belt was done @ 180k, valve job last year. He said this about the transmission "Has overdrive issue for at least 10 years. It sometimes jerks at about 45-50 mil/Hr. it's typical to this model."

Has anyone experienced this issue? A quick google search brought up some discussions on 4x4wire. The tranny issue, high mileage and occasional check engine light are of concern. The seller is the original owner which is great and the photos look like it has been well taken care of. What does everyone think of it? What's a fair price given these concerns?

I can't find a single gen 2.5 for sale in the state of CO. If anyone knows of one with a locker let me know!

doesn't sound like a common issue, not one I have heard of... but 4x4wire has a lot of information that I would deem to be quality.

I am not an expert with the 99 models but over the past 14 years of being a mitsubishi forum member, I can only recall one instance of overdrive issues. But that was on an 89 Dodge Raider not the 1999. I'm not sure what common issue he is referring to. It seems like to me I would have heard about by now if it really was common. Hmm...

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
I've had 1 1994 SR that had the issue and my friend has a 1998 with it, It engages 4th gear really hard. I wonder if it's caused by having the ATF flushed with homebrew Dextron + friction modifier from lube shops that don't buy vehicle specific oils. Basically they buy the cheapest ATF in bulk and add the friction modifier to make it compliant with your vehicle, I don't think the jerk/hard engage hurts the clutches but it's certainly uncool. I say this because the only Montero i've had with the issue had it's trans flushed by a mom and pop lube shop and the issue developed sometime after that.

I'm thinking the torque converter doesn't unlock between 3rd and 4th gear so when it makes the final shift it will engage hard. The TC should however unlock, shift and then once you hit cruise RPM lock. I can watch the TC action on my tach in my '98 and '99 Monteros, way back in my old '94 it seemed like once it locked in 3rd it didn't unlock until i went back to 2nd or 1st. My wife drove that truck for years and she drove it really hard, i've since sold it to a friend and he's also put a ton of miles on it and a lot of hard wheeling. I don't think the issue makes the truck any less reliable just less comfortable and i think there would be an easy fix for it.

Didn't someone go look at the above black gen 2.5 and say it was pouring out oil? It sure does look nice and is tempting though, I wish it was local so I could look it over with my own eyes. It's exactly what I am looking for.

I haven't looked at it and don't know of anyone who has. Maybe they'll chime in.

I am the one that went and saw it in person and got the keys, started the car and let it run for a while while I inspected it. I did not drive it out because a truck was blocking it in and the owner of the truck was out for a test drive with another vehicle.

This Monty leaks a lot. Open the engine and look inside. A lot of oil. Then go under and look and you will see it slowly form a drop and drop off on the grass area where it is parked. It is strategically parked when the dripping oil is lost in the grass under it where a vigilant buyer might not see. Put that in your driveway and after 5 mins, move the car and see. There must be some drops already.

Apart from that, the car does look nice for its age. Seats look good, it starts strong and the transmission shifts smoothly. Not a car I can encourage someone to buy, except it i someone who is ready to put the work into it. Besides, if you think the price is attractive ask yourself why on earth someone has not bought it yet. I have a guess for an answer: because the car needs a lot of work in the engine.
