Most reliable soft roader for 10k

My fiance's mom is in the market for a new vehicle. She needs something with AWD, that is not too truck-like, and costs 10K or less. Unfortunately, she is not a huge fan of Subarus because of the stationwagon look.

She doesn't want truck-like or station-wagon-like?

I think that leaves the Subaru Legacy or Impreza sedans.

There are other options, such as Audi and Volvo sedans but she'd probably be looking at higher cost of ownership.

If she doesn't mind a sporty-wagon look, an AWD Toyota Matrix might be a good find. They're not terribly common though.

The Toyota RAV4 would be my first choice in the AWD category, but it does look decidedly ute-like.
