Motor noise on with ham on a tacoma

I put a Yeasu in my truck a few months ago. I really like it but i have a motor noise on it. I mounted the antenna like Mountainpete did. Has any one else had this problem with there Tacomas and ham radio? I used a mad mount and relocated it to the roof and the noise wen away. I really do not want to move it from the front drivers hood seam. It is syemetrical with my radio antenna and its out of the way.

So wait, an antenna in a different location has no noise. That means it's the coax and antenna, not the power leads. I would look to see how the coax runs to the current antenna. Make sure it's as far from the alternator and ignition components as possible. If you still get noise, you have to move it. Does the noise transmit in you signal as well?

Where is your coax run? It sounds like you have it run along the transmission tunnel, this often times will pick up a harmonic from the engine and create a noise. When you did the mag mount, was the run the same or was it just out in the air as a test?

By moving the antenna you have basicly found out the noise is coming in via the antenna. Most vehicle control systems are just a BIG GIANT noise generator spewing out RF all over the place. Sometimes you DO need to move the antenna. You might be able to isolate the noise but in most cases your going to be hard pressed to get rid of engine control noise. On top of that you really dont want all that RF getting into the engine control wires. If you MUST keep it in a specific location try different wire routes, you might need a little longer coax but how about running the coax to the front of the vehicle, across the front then back down the other side of the truck and into the cabin. I dont know the tacoma so YMMV but try a non direct path, go up and over instead of down and over, go forward and around instead of back.

Thanks for the all the replies. The radio is mounted behind the back passenger seat on my double cab. I routed the coax under the carpet under the door entry guards, under the dash out the rubber boot and to the antenna right buy the hood hinge. I am not transmitting the sound. Trying to run the coax randomly sounds like a good idea. Next week at our local ham fest i plan on picking up some ferite beads and som more coax. Do yall think the beads might work? I know it is not elecrical because i can take the antenna off and the noise goes away, and i have a subpanel behind my back seat fead with # 4 + and - straight to the battery. On one of the repeater frequency its is so bad it breaks the maximum tone squelch. :ar15: RF

That boot if it is like my 4Runner is the boot that they Fuel injection harness is in. Tach signal, Fuel pump wires, and all sorts of stuff in that harness. I did the same routing for my CB and need to move it for the same reasons.

You need to get the coax away from that FI harness. Pull the passenger side kick panel (inside) I believe the radio antenna exits behind that kick panel into the fender. The splash guard inside the fender is easily removed. One quick hole through the inner fender up by the hood hinge and a grommet should fix the problem.

Near the engine is the worse possible place for an antenna. I'm a Taco owner too and I've been thinking about mounting possibilities. The roof would be best, but I'm not crazy about drilling holes on the body.

I will try to get it away from the harness, Thanks. I agree Alvaro an NMO mount on the roof would be the best set up, but i plan to put an RTT on the camper and a roof rack on the cab area. Buy the way SWEET CRUISER, and does INTI make a short rack with the light and gas can space that I could squize on the double cab taco?

I don't think INTI makes one for the Tacos. In Venezuela the current generation of the dual cab Hilux is called Kavak. From what I've read, they are based on the previous Tacoma platform. But in any case the roofline is different.

Because of the way the Venezuelan government has setup it's foreign exchange laws, it is almost impossible to export. For a company to export anything, the buyer must deposit the foreign currency in a Venezuelan bank at a fixed exchange rate (Bs.2,150/US). The black market rate is around Bs.6,000 per USD. While the price of the racks are very competitive at the black market price of the Venezuelan Bolivar, at the official rate they are more expensive than any competitor.

Right now we've decided to step back hoping that sooner than later, currency exchange laws will change in Venezuela and we'll be able to import these racks again.
