Move BAJA Rack fuel can holders into rig versus on the roof rack.

Last year I purchased a pair of Baja Rack gas can holders which I mounted to my roof rack. After several trips with them up top I changed my mind on their location (too much weight up high) and instead elected to mount one of them to my sleeping platform next to my fridge instead.

I did the project with the my friend Micheal's help (he really did quite a bit of the fabrication which allowed me to document the process with pictures... Thanks Mike!!) We mounted it to my sleeping platform in such a way as I can still use it as a bed when we get to camp and when we're on the road, I can use it to hold my gas cans.

The rack would be mounted underneath the platform so that I could put a cover over it to allow me to also use it as a bed.

Mike cut out the carpet then using a drill and jig saw I cut out the hole.

Next we created a couple of spacers that would sit between the gas holders and the bottom of the platform. We built it using inexpensive poplar.

Here's the holder in place bolted down with some 5/16" machine screws...

Here's how the gas cans would sit (sans top part that holds them in place)...

Here's the insert along with the spacers attached to it so it will sit flush inside the can holder.
