MPG--4runner

Looking to buy a 4runner soon, round $5000, so bout the newest I would be able to afford would be a 98 or so, I'll be driving it a lot too, so mpg is a concern for me, first question did they make the 4cyl with 4wd in the 3rd gen? If so, or not so... what kind of gas mileage are you guys getting out of your 6cyl?

Yes they were made, but not too many of them around. Plus the MPG difference was only about 1 mpg and for that you give up about 35hp and 40 ft/lbs of torque.

Wow, thats not as much as expected... sounds like the 6cyl is the way to go... is the 4cyl the 22re or was that gone by then?

Gone but the new engine is proving to be every bit as good and a few more ponies. Just not very common in the 4Runner.

My 22RE only gets 18/24 on 33's (Regeared) the 3.4 V6 from 96 up is a really good motor. Just stay away from the 89-95 3.0 V6 they were problem prone.

96 4Runners also experienced some engine problems (V6), so I'd go with a 97 or 98. Try to find one with a rear locker!

our 98 is a 2wd and the 4cyl bought for my wife to run around town in, i have gotten as much as 25hwy, but typically around 21-22 so not much better than the 6. A skinnier tire will help some, i have a friend with a 6 and he gets as good if not better than mine.
