Edmunds.com bought a 2012 Jeep Wrangler two door, and proceeded to modify it using parts from the Mopar catalog. They added stronger axles, a suspension lift, taller off-road tires, lower gears to compensate for tire size, and some body armor. They kept careful track of gasoline consumption.
