Just saw the Bob Rohrman sticker on your 4runner, did you come all the way up here to Indiana to buy that? Good old Bob Rohrman is kinda our local annoyance with his dumb commercials.

I think he might have... he's always whining about this reddish orange stuff that grows under the truck...
I know hes got family in that part of the world.

Yep. Bought the truck at Rohrman's used car lot in Lafayette, Indiana in 2006. My parents live up here (actually I'm in IN now). My Dad is a professor at Purdue.

... and people seem to be confused up here. They put salt on the road instead of their baked potatoes. Weird!

If I end up making another pass at a beefier alternator, thats exactly what I'll put in there. Those things are cool, but $$$, especially at the rate that I'm seeing these things peter out. Right now I'm just fed up with changing them, had to lend my spare to thughes on the last trip. Maybe a relocation rather than a second alternator would be a better idea. They just don't hold up to those river crossings! The Toyota ones do better than most, but one of those got fried last trip as well!

Yup pretty common on any truck to have failing alts if you play in mud & water. That silty water stuff is the worst!

For this very reason we went with a custom high mount on the diesel in my Patrol,

that is as high as we could possibly get it and still be able to close the hood!

as you can see in the last pic it just barely clears the top rad hose.

If I find this to still get hammered by water/mud then I am planning a splash guard around it.

If you submerge the alt a lot....it is just going to fail. Usually be the bushes that go bad. Perhaps carry a spare set and get rebuilding it down pat so you can do it on the trail in say 30 mins?

I need to update this thread with some pictures...

New storage system... check.

New lower ball joints... check.

New water pump... check.

Another power steering pump (#3)... check.

Having a rig that is ready to lead a group half way across the country on dirt roads... priceless.
