MRE's at Costco

I was at Costco the other day and found a 5 gal bucket with "emergency food" in it. the cost is around $110. It had around 200 pouches in it. There were Entrees, sides and maybe even dessert. I wonder if the bucket is there to help out afterwards.:lurk: :chowtime:

I just saw them too! I didn't really look at them but for some reason I thought it was just a 5 gallon bucket of grits. :sombrero:

Just add water and cheese and it'll last you for 5 days. Heh. Didn't know they were MREs.

MRE's are military only and not for sale at Costco. When I have seen them for sale to the public they go for about $80 for a case of 12 meals. The "Emergency Food" bucket that I saw at Costco a week or two ago made some kind of "soup" that I didnt find very palateable, but, I was so busy eating all the other free samples that I didnt really give the product or packaging a very good look.

MRE= Meals ready to eat? Would that not include any type of product this similar? I remember the C-rations that i had in Italy that my dad gave me:yikes: I guess i should have titled it differently. No offence to you was implied.

Some of the entree choice seem to copy the ones from the MRE's that i have seen and read about. I did not see a bottle of Tabasco in it:victory:

No worries. I was just saying that the last time I checked the MRE's are labeled "property of US govt, not for sale" or something like that. I've actually heard of guys getting in trouble for selling cases of them out in town.

There are companies that make look alike "MRE" meals that are almost indistinguishable from the issue ones. For instance, Cold Weather MRE's are all freeze dried and made by Oregon Freeze Dried Foods, makers of Mountain House backpacking meals found at REI and Wal-Mart. Same thing, different package.

yup...a few of us got together a while back and ordered some of the "taste-alikes" from one of the survival suppliers...the mil guys with us said they were the same thing, for all intents and purposes. same/similar calorie count, "food" content, plug ya up and make ya stinky, etc...

we got ours in boxes from cheaper than dirt (maybe it's "cheap as dirt"?)...be warned, once those guys get your mailing address youll get catalogs offering everything from "fantasy sword replicas" to survival gear for the day when the reds invade, or when the atf attacks your splinter cell's bunker, whichever comes first.

...tho they did send me a little spring loaded plastic pellet gun that resulted in quite a bit of carnage around the apartment :elkgrin: ...

it was those...hopefully the link works.

of course, if you eat them, nobody will want to sleep in your tent, walk behind you, stand downwind, or be within about twenty feet in still air. words cannot convey the full effect of the foul miasma they will produce on the way out.

and, it will be bright green.

I still have couple bags of Mountain House left from backpacking trip. It's not too bad when you are cold and hungry. Oh, you are right about the smell when they come out. It's not a pleasant experience sitting on toilet at home when you are back from a 4 day backpack trip, even my cats stay away from the bathroom when I'm in there.
